Women’s Soccer Defeats Adrian 2-1 in Overtime, Earns MIAA Title Outright

ADRIAN – The Calvin College women’s soccer team needed overtime to defeat Adrian 2-1 and win the MIAA Championship outright Wednesday afternoon.  The Knights used goals from freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel and junior Kelly Koets in overtime to defeat the Bulldogs.  Calvin outshot Adrian 12-11 in the 99-minute contest including 9-4 in shots on goal.  This MIAA title is the ninth in school history, more than any other MIAA school.  Calvin will host the MIAA Tournament as the top seed.  The semifinals take place at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 2 at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. Calvin will meet Adrian again in the semifinals with the game slated for 3:30 p.m. Alma will face Hope in the first semifinal at 1 p.m.

Women’s Cross Country Team Now Ranked Fifth - Men’s Team Ranked Second

The Calvin women’s cross country team has moved up to number five in the latest Division III National Poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. Meanwhile, the Calvin men’s team is once again ranked second in the men’s poll and received two first place votes. Haverford is the top-ranked team in the men’s poll and received the other six first place votes.Both Calvin cross country teams are preparing for the NCAA III Regional meet on November 10 at Anderson (IN) University. Calvin currently has seven teams nationally ranked. In addition to its cross country teams, its men’s soccer team is ranked 22nd, its women’s volleyball team is ranked second, its women’s basketball team is ranked number one, its women’s swimming and diving team is ranked 15th and its men’s swimming and diving team is ranked 25th.

Men’s Soccer Closes out MIAA Regular Season With 2-1 Win at Alma

ALMA - The 22nd-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team picked up a 2-1 win at Alma on Tuesday. Battling cold and blustery conditions, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead behind first half goals from sophomore Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and senior Chris Nance (Washington, MI/Warren DeLaSalle HS). Senior Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) assisted on the Vegter goal while freshman Sam Hanover (Saint Johns, MI/Saint Johns HS) picked up the assist on the goal by Nance.Alma tallied in the 81st minute on a shot by Max Vanderpool but could not score again as the Knights held on for the win.Both teams had 16 shots at goal. Calvin senior goalkeeper Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) had five saves for the Knights. Graham Wallace had five saves for Alma. Calvin will now prepare to host an MIAA Tournament semifinal game on Thursday against Kalamazoo at 3 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Crack CollegeSwimming.com Top 25 Polls

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have cracked the first set of Division III Top 25 rankings released by Collegeswimming.com. The Calvin women are ranked 15th in the poll while the Calvin men are ranked 25th. Both teams are preparing for busy weekends as the the Knights travel to Alma on Friday for a 6 p.m. dual meet and then journey to Wheaton on Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.  The Calvin/Wheaton women’s dual meet will feature a matchup of nationally-ranked teams as the Wheaton women are ranked eighth.

2012-13 Calvin Women’s Basketball Preview

The Calvin College women’s basketball team’s season is just over two weeks away, and the 2012-13 team is already hitting the gym.Coming off of a 28-2 campaign that led Calvin all the way to the national quarterfinals, the Knights were recently ranked preseason number one in the country by the Women’s Division III Basketball Newsletter.  The Knights have since been ranked number one by both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association of America and D3hoops.com. WDIII News also named Calvin senior Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian) the preseason Women’s Division III National Player of the Year.  A season ago, Verkaik was runner-up for Women’s Division III National Player of the Year.

Calvin’s Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen Receive MIAA Runner of the Week Accolades

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen as its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through Oct. 27.Kerr, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), won the MIAA championship meet for the second consecutive year Saturday at Whiffle Tree Golf Club in Concord, covering the 8-kilometer course in 24:37. He finished 12 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor as he lead Calvin to its 26th consecutive MIAA men’s cross country championship. Kerr is being honored as Runner of the Week for the third time this season and fourth time in his career.Michmerhuizen, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), took first place in Saturday’s MIAA championship meet at Whiffle Tree Golf Club in Concord by 17 seconds, completing the 6-kilometer course in 21:49. Her performance led the Knights to the MIAA championship. Michmerhuizen is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time this season and in her career.

Volleyball Blanks Albion, Will Host Trine in MIAA Tournament

ALBION – The Calvin College volleyball team concluded the regular season Saturday with a straight set victory over the Britons of Albion College by scores of 25-15, 25-11, 25-15.  The win for the Knights is their 36th straight MIAA conference victory.Calvin was led offensively by Lizzie Kamp, who scored 16 kills on just 26 attempts.  She hit a blistering .538 on the match.  Senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in nine kills and four blocks, two of the solo variety.  Rietema dished out 29 assists.  Calvin totaled 48 digs and seven blocks as a team.Albion was led on senior day by Lauren DeLuyck with six kills.  With its win, Calvin improves to 26-2 and 16-0 in the MIAA on the season. This tournament Warners speaks of will be hosted by Calvin.  Second seeded Hope will play third seeded Alma on Friday at 5:30 at the Van Noord Arena.  Top seeded Calvin will face fourth seeded Trine at 7:30.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Claim Dual Meet Victories at Olivet

OLIVET – The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up their first dual meet victories of the year on Saturday with the Calvin men picking up a 162-124 victory while the Calvin were victorious 197-83. Calvin had several standout performances in both competitions. On the men’s side, freshman Aaron Vennema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) and junior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Moun-tain, MI/Kingsford HS) were both double-winners with Vennema winning the 200 freestyle (1:46.77) and 500 freestyle (4:52.70) while Mitchell claimed gold in the 100 backstroke (54.44) and 200 back-stroke (2:03.86). On the women’s side, Calvin took first place in 13 events. Senior Stephanie Fox (Kentwood, MI/Home Schooled) won the 1000 freestyle (11:03.60) and 100 freestyle (55.75) while freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.17) and 200 breaststroke (2:31.84). In addition, senior Shelby Cloyd (Kalamazoo/Plainwell HS) was a double-winner, claiming first in the 200 butterfly (2:18.73) and 100 butterfly (1:02.90). On the diving boards, senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won the one-meter competition (234.00) and three-meter competition (252.25). Both teams are back in action on November 2 for dual meets at Alma College (6 p.m.).

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Capture MIAA Titles

ALBION – The Calvin College men’s and women’s cross country teams ran in the second of two MIAA Jamborees Saturday morning hosted by Albion College.  Both Knights’ teams were victorious and captured the MIAA Championship. The men’s race was first off at 11:00am.  The Knights finished in the top four spots.  Senior Dan Kerr (Petosky/Petosky) paced Calvin running the eight kilometer course in 24:37.  Two fellow seniors, David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center) and Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional) finished together with a time of 24:49.  Junior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg) finished fourth with a time of 24:58.  Calvin finished with 20 points as a team.  Hope finished second with 75 points.  This was the 26th consecutive MIAA championship for the Calvin men’s cross country program.  The women’s race began at noon.  Calvin had four finishers in the top eight, taking first, second, sixth and seventh.  Junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian) won the six kilometer race with a time of 21:49.  Senior Alyssa Penning was right behind, finishing second with a time of 22:06.  Defending conference champion Hope had the next three spots.  Sophomores Katie Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) and Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) secured Calvin’s victory, finishing sixth and seventh respectively with times of 22:24 for Ardinger and 22:26 for Penning.  The Knights finished with 26 points, 11 ahead of defending champion Hope.  Both teams will return to action at NCAA Regionals November 10, hosted by Anderson University, IN.

Calvin Men’s Soccer Clinches Outright MIAA Regular Season Title With 2-2 Tie at Adrian

ADRIAN – Calvin clinched the outright MIAA regular season title with a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Adrian Saturday afternoon. It marks the third time in four years that Calvin has fought Adrian to a tie at Adrian’s Performance Stadium. In Saturday’s games, Calvin came from behind to take a 2-1 lead but then saw Adrian tie the game in the closing minutes of regulation. The tie snaps Calvin’s 12-game win streak but the Knights maintain an unbeaten streak of 13 games heading into their regular season finale at Alma on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Knights will then host an MIAA Tournament semifinal match on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field against an opponent yet to be determined.
