BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Ryan Souders era of Calvin men’s soccer opened on a winning note as Calvin defeated Augustana 4-1 Friday night at a tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. The contest was the first for Calvin under first-year head coach Ryan Souders and the Knights did not disappoint, bolting out to a 3-0 halftime advantage. The two teams then traded single goals in the second half as the Knights cruised to the win.

BEXLEY, OH - Playing in the south suburbs of Columbus, Calvin claimed a pair of victories at a tournament co-hosted by Capital University Friday. The Knights opened with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-12 victory over Transylvania University and then came back to top host Capital 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 in the evening. In the win over Capital, third-ranked Calvin received 16 kills from senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) who recorded an attack percentage of .500. Junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added 31 assists and 14 digs while senior libero Kelly Gordon (South Christian HS) had 19 digs. 16 Calvin players played in the win over Capital.
Friday, August 31, 2012Lou Collins Memorial Tournament Results Day One
BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men’s golf team is tied for seventh through one day of competition of the Lou Collins Memorial Tournament held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Calvin fired a first day total of 313 strokes and is tied with Hope for seventh place in a field of 15 teams. Indiana Wesleyan leads the tournament with a first day total of 298 strokes.Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin’s top golfer on Friday with a round of 76 . He was followed by senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and junior Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with rounds of 78.

The Calvin women’s golf team’s season began at breezy Thornapple Pointe golf club on Friday morning. The Knights fell to Aquinas by a team score of 341-368.
Senior Elise Doezema paced Calvin shooting an 85, while junior Carlia Canto shot 90. Others to score for Calvin were freshmen Casey Harkema and Shara Reynolds shooting 94 and 99 respectively. Junior Kristina Raiz shot 76, good for the low round of the day for the Saints.
“It was much windier today than the past couple weeks,” Calvin head coach Jerry Bergsma said. “We didn’t play as well as could have, but I saw good things, and am excited for Olivet next weekend.”
The Knights will return to action a week from today when they travel to the Medalist Golf Club in Olivet, MI.

With light rain tumbling down and his three sons running by his side, Calvin College swim coach Dan Gelderloos realized a longtime dream last weekend, completing the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile Michigan Titanium Triathlon in a time just over 12 hours.The triathlon was held at official “Ironman” distance and allowed the 40-year old Gelderloos to achieve a goal he had set his eyes on long ago. Recent Calvin graduate Rebecca Kamp has been named one of 30 women to be considered for the NCAA’s Woman of the Year Award.The top 30 women are composed of 10 honorees from each of the NCAA’s three divisions and span various NCAA sports. In September, three finalists will be chosen from each division to form nine finalists for the award. The 2012 Woman of the Year will be announced and the top 30 women will be honored during an Oct. 14 ceremony in Indianapolis.The top 30 honorees reflect the pillars of the Woman of the Year award, with outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. Kamp is the second individual from Calvin to be named a top 30 honoree as Lisa Winkle was so honored in 2007. Kamp graduated from Calvin this past May and is now teaching at Westminster Christian School in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Calvin men’s soccer team has been picked to finish second in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll released earlier today. Hope is the preseason favorite with the Flying Dutchmen receiving six out of a possible eight first place votes. Calvin received one first place vote as did Olivet which finished third in the poll. Trine is picked to finish fourth followed by Adrian in fifth, Albion in sixth, Alma in seventh and Kalamazoo in eighth. A year ago, Calvin captured its fifth consecutive MIAA regular season title - becoming the first school in MIAA men’s soccer history to do so. The Knights later advanced to the NCAA III Tournament finals before bowing to Ohio Wesleyan University. Calvin is scheduled to open its 2012 campaign on August 31 against Augustana University in a game slated to be played in Bloomington, Illinois.

The Calvin women’s soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in the MIAA preseason coaches’ poll released this afternoon. Defending MIAA regular season champion Adrian has been picked to repeat as league champion while defending MIAA Tournament champion Alma has been picked second. Kalamazoo is picked to finish third followed by Hope in fourth, Calvin in fifth, Saint Mary’s in sixth, Trine in seventh, Olivet in eighth and Albion in ninth. Adrian received seven of a possible nine first place votes while Alma and Hope both received one first place vote apiece. Calvin will open its season on September 4 at home against Wheaton (IL) - the 2011 national runner-up with the opening kickoff set for 4 p.m.

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams are both nationally-ranked in the first Division III Top 35 Poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.On the men’s side, Calvin is ranked number-seven. On the women’s side, Calvin is ranked 10th. North Central (IL) is the top-ranked team in the men’s poll while Middlebury (CT) is the top-ranked team in the women’s poll. A year ago the Calvin men’s team finished 11th at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships while the Calvin women’s team finished 13th. Both teams are led by head coach Brian Diemer.

The first set of Division III regional rankings for men’s and women’s cross country have been released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association and both Calvin teams are ranked number-one in their respective regional polls. The Calvin men’s team holds the top spot in the men’s Great Lakes regional rankings with Wabash second. The Calvin women’s team is ranked number-one in the women’s Great Lakes regional rankings followed by Oberlin in second. Both Calvin teams captured Great Lakes Regional titles a year ago. The Calvin teams will open their seasons on September 8 when they host the Knight Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex.2 3 >
