Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Teams Receive All-Academic Team Award from USTFCCCA

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams have once again received the All-Academic Team Award from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Calvin women’s team has now received the award 12 consecutive years while the Calvin men’s team has received the honor four straight years. In order to receive the award, a team needed to have posted a minimum 3.10 grade point average or better. The Calvin women’s team posted a 3.53 grade point average to rank seventh among 137 women’s teams that received the award. The Calvin men’s team recorded a 3.20 grade point average and was one of 74 men’s teams to receive the award.

Women’s Track and Field Lands Four on USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

USTFCCCA Women's Division III Track and Field All-Academic Team

Four members of the Calvin women’s track and field team have been named to the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. The four individuals so honored from Calvin are senior Kaitlin Diemer, juniors Alyssa Penning and Carissa Verkaik and sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

Women’s Basketball Team Finishes 11th in WBCA Top 25 Academic Honor Roll List

The Calvin women’s basketball team finished as one of the top teams in Division III this past spring and now the Knights have finished as one of the top academic squads as well.Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Knights have received the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Academic Honor Roll Award. The Knights finished 11th amongst all Division III schools with a team GPA of 3.518. The honor comes on the heels of a 2011-12 season that saw the Calvin women’s basketball team reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament and finish with an overall record of 28-2.

Volleyball Receives AVCA Team Academic Award

For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women’s volleyball team has received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. The award is given to all collegiate institutions that post a cumulative team grade point average of 3.30 or above. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Honored for Academics - Individuals Honored as Well

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team has been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honor roll list for the spring semester. In order to receive the award, a team must post a 3.10 grade point average or above. The Calvin women’s team also was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America honor roll list for the fall semester as well. In addition, Calvin had three individuals from its swim program receive individual CSCAA All-America honors as junior Sam Klaasen and freshman Erika Waugh of the women’s team and sophomore Andy Krafft of the men’s team were so honored. In order to receive the award, individuals needed to have posted at least an NCAA III conditional qualifying score and post a 3.50 grade point average.

Women’s Tennis Team Receives ITA All-Academic Award

For the fifth consecutive year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has received the ITA All-Academic Award. All five awards have come under current head coach Jerry Bergsma. In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2011-12 academic year. In addition five members of the Calvin women’s team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete academic honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the 2010-11 academic year. The five individuals from Calvin are junior Jordan Ipema, sophomores Emily Swets and Tina Geelhoed and freshmen Samantha Reitsma and Megan Visser.

Men’s Tennis Team Receives ITA All-Academic Award

For the eighth consecutive year, the Calvin men’s tennis team has received the ITA All-Academic Award. All eight awards have come under the watch of current Calvin men’s tennis coach John Ross. 
In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2011-12 academic year. In addition, three members of the Calvin men’s tennis team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete academic honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the 2011-12 academic year. The three individuals from Calvin to be so honored are junior Brian DeMaagd and sophomores Stephen Healy and John Strikwerda.

The latest edition of Calvin’s Knightfile Magazine is now online. The edition features Calvin’s recently completed spring sports season headlined by a look at Calvin’s long-standing steeplechase tradition in track and field. Other sports covered include men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball. This spring, Calvin senior Nick Kramer captured the national championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
