Calvin Cross Country Teams Compete at Notre Dame Invitational

NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon with both teams competing in the Gold Division. On the men’s side, third-ranked Calvin took fourth with 133 points, trailing top-ranked (Division III) North Central (IL) which took third with 67 points, the University of Windsor which placed second with 50 points and Grand Valley State which won with a team score of 45 points. In the women’s gold division race, Calvin placed seventh with 229 points with Grand Valley State winning with a team score of 40 points.

As a college student, juggling academics, athletics, and your social life can be difficult. Add to that a day a week volunteering at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids, and you’re schedule can almost be void of any free time. But, as Calvin College sophomore swimmer Adam Alexander puts it, “The Bible calls us to help those who are less fortunate, and, it’s good for the community.” A chemical engineering major with the intention of entering medical school after graduating from Calvin, Alexander is planning on going to med school after attending Calvin to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery.
Calvin Men’s Cross Country Ranked Number-Three/Calvin Women’s Team Ranked Eighth

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams continue to move up in the national polls. In the latest set of national rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association, the Calvin men are ranked third and the Calvin women are ranked eighth. Both teams have moved up one spot from a week ago when the Calvin men were ranked fourth and the Calvin women ranked ninth. North Central is the top-ranked team in the men’s poll. Calvin will get a chance to run against the Cardinals this Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational. On the women’s side, Middlebury (Vt.) is again ranked number-one. Both Calvin teams will run at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday. A group of runners representing both teams will also compete at the Loyola Invitational on Saturday.
Volleyball Sweeps Hope in Three Sets at Van Noord Arena in Showdown for First Place

The Knights extended their undefeated season with a three-set sweep over 13th-ranked Hope. Top-ranked Calvin took the match by scores of 26-24, 25-20, 25-16. After a close set one, Calvin continued to build momentum and pulled away for the three-set win in front of more than 2,000 fans at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Lizzie Kamp led the Knights with 13 kills, Rebecca Kamp added 10 and VanderPlas had eight. Rietema dished out 32 assists among six different attackers, effectively keeping the Hope defense on its heels. With the win, Calvin improved its record to 15-0 and 7-0 in conference. The loss dropped Hope to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA. Calvin travels to Adrian next Tuesday.

Women’s Soccer Edges Saint Mary’s 2-1 on Last-Second Goal by Francesca Smith

Coming off two strong wins against conference opponents, the Calvin women’s soccer team was looking to continue its win streak against the visiting Belles of St. Mary’s.Fighting back and forth in the first half, neither team was able to put the ball in the opposing team’s net, putting the game at 0-0 at halftime. Calvin then picked up two second half goals from junior Francesca Smith to gain the win with Smith’s second tally breaking a 1-1 tie with just 11 seconds left in regulation. The 2-1 Calvin victory boosts the Knights to 4-5-0 overall and to 4-1-0 in the MIAA. The Knights are tied for second place in the league standings with Adrian and will travel to Adrian on Saturday for a game slated to start at noon at Adrian’s Performance Stadium.
Volleyball Team Remains Top-Ranked Team in AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll

The Calvin women’s volleyball team will head into a Wednesday night showdown with rival Hope ranked number-one in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights again received 22 of a possible 24 first place votes in this week’s poll with Washington University receiving the remaining two first place votes. Washington University (Mo.) is ranked second while Wittenberg (Oh.) is ranked third and Emory University (Ga.) ranked fourth. Hope is ranked 13th. Wednesday’s match at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena with Hope is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Calvin will enter the match at 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the MIAA while Hope will come in at 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the MIAA.
Men’s Soccer Team Has Four-Game Win Streak Snapped by Trine

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin suffered its first conference defeat Tuesday afternoon and the process, saw its four-game win streak come to an end. The Knights dropped a 2-0 decision to undefeated Trine (7-0-2, 3-0-1 MIAA) and fall into third place in the MIAA standings as the Knights (7-3-0 overall) are 3-1-0 in league play with Olivet (4-0-0 MIAA) now on top of the league standings after a 2-1 overtime victory over Hope Tuesday afternoon. The Knights return to action on Saturday, traveling to Albion for a 2:30 p.m. match.
Men’s Golf Second at MIAA Jamboree #6 - Closes Gap on Field in Overall Standings

WEST OLIVE - The Calvin men’s golf team continued its strong play, placing second at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope Monday afternoon at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. The Knights recorded a team score of 307 strokes behind the sterling play of junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who claimed medalist honors with a round of 71. It marks the second time in Kuiper’s career that he has earned medalist honors at an MIAA Jamboree. He now leads the MIAA individual standings with an average of 74.8 strokes-per-round. Calvin remains in sixth place in the overall MIAA team standings with two MIAA Jamborees left to play but the Knights are now just four strokes out of third place and just eight strokes out of second place. Calvin is scheduled to host the next MIAA Jamboree on October 3 at the Watermark Country Club with the final competition set for October 8 at the Lenawee Country Club in Adrian.
Matt VanderRoest & Jodi Hoekstra Receive MIAA Runner of the Week Honors in Cross Country

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin runners
Matt Vander Roest and Jodi Hoekstra its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through September 24. A junior from Ann Arbor (Huron HS), Vander Roest took first place at the MIAA Jamboree at Trine’s Zollner Golf Course Saturday with a time of 26:01.
Vander Roest finished eight seconds ahead of his nearest competitor as he helped lead Calvin to a first-place finish in the men’s meet with 16 points. A senior from Homer Glen, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), Hoekstra took first place at the MIAA Jamboree on Saturday at Trine with a time of 22:52, finishing 28 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Hoekstra helped lead Calvin to a first-place finish in the women’s meet with 27 points as the Knights placed five runners in the top 10. Hoekstra has now won her last two races.
Justin Ahearne Named MIAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin defender Justin Ahearne its MIAA Defensive Players of the Week in men’s soccer for games played through September 24. Ahearne, a senior from Hudsonville, anchored the Calvin defense as the Knights posted back-to-back shutouts to remain tied for first in the MIAA race. Ahearne’s efforts helped Calvin defeat Hope, 2-0, in a matchup of last year’s MIAA co-champions, and Kalamazoo 2-0. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Trine University for a 4 p.m. contest.
