Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Receives Team Academic Award from College Swim Coaches Association

For the second consecutive year, the Calvin College women’s swimming and diving team has received the College Swim Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Award. In addition, two members of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team coached by Dan Gelderloos have received individual College Swim Coaches All-Academic honors. In order to receive team academic honors, a team needed to post a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better during the 2010-11 academic year. The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team posted a team grade point average of 3.37. Individuals from the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team that received individual all-academic honors were sophomore Elizabeth Counsell and freshman Elise Kaufman.
Women’s Volleyball Team Receive Team Academic Award from American Volleyball Coaches Association

The Calvin women’s volleyball team has achieved success on the court. Now the Knights are being recognized for their success in the classroom. For the second straight year, the Calvin women’s volleyball team has received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
During the 2010-11 academic year, the Calvin volleyball team achieved a cumulative team grade point average of 3.451.

The 2010-11 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 111 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years.
Of the students, 10 are from Calvin.
Nine Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award

Nine Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA’s Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2010-11 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. Seven of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the men’s cross country team and men’s golf teams also achieved the feat. Calvin teams that received the honor this year include: the women’s cross country team, women’s soccer team, men’s cross country team, women’s volleyball team, women’s track and field team, women’s tennis team, women’s swimming and diving team, men’s tennis team and women’ basketball team.
Calvin/Hope Cross Country Squads Team Up For Another Edition of Rival Relay

On the morning of July 16, another edition of the Rival Relay between the Calvin and Hope men’s and women’s cross country teams took place. The event, which dates back to 1919, involves a seven-leg relay that begins in Grand Rapids and concludes in Holland. The event is entirely organized by the student-athletes without any aid from the coaching staffs of either school. Saturday’s race began at John Ball Park in Grand Rapids and ended at Tunnel Park in Holland. The first six legs were five miles each, with the anchor leg finishing the final 5.85 miles. In between, runners traversed through the streets of Grandville, past the cornfields of Jamestown, through downtown Zeeland, past the blueberry patches of north Holland and then concluding at Tunnel Park.
Both Calvin teams were victorious. Members of the Calvin men’s relay team were Alex VanHaitsma, Steven Haagsma, Job Christiansen, Alex Wrobel, Greg Whittle, Jacob Kuyvenhoven and David VandeBunte Ben Lewis also participated, riding his bike throughout the entire race. Members of the Calvin women’s relay were Alyssa Penning, Kaitlin Diemer, Jodi Hoekstra, Sarah Fennema, Lydia Peterson, Samantha Westveer and Nicole Michermhuizen. At the conclusion of the race, both teams from Calvin and Hope gathered for a post-race cookout at Tunnel Park.
