Women’s Golf Concludes Competition at MIAA Spring Tournament

SOUTH BEND, IN - Three members of the Calvin women’s golf team competed at the MIAA spring tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Knights were led by freshman Carlia Canto who had back-to-back rounds of 87. On Friday, sophomore Rachel Whitaker had a round of 96 and came back with a 108 on Saturday. Freshman Ashley Tiefenthal had a round of 100 on Friday and a round of 104 on Saturday.
Men’s Tennis Falls to Kzoo in MIAA Tourney Finals - All-MIAA Tennis Teams Announced

ALBION - Calvin’s run through the MIAA Tournament came to a conclusion Saturday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by defending champion Kalamazoo College 6-0 in the MIAA Tournament final. With the victory, Kalamazoo gains the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin concludes its season with an overall record of 16-8. After the conclusion of the tournament, Calvin senior Andrew DeVlieger was named to the All-MIAA first team while senior Roland Eldridge and sophomore Preston Phillips were both named to the All-MIAA second team. In addition, Eldridge was named the recipient of the MIAA’s prestigious Allen B. Stowe Memorial Award - becoming the ninth individual in Calvin history to be so honored.
Melissa Oosterhouse Named MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in Women’s Tennis

For the second straight year, Calvin College senior Melissa Oosterhouse has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in women’s tennis. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Oosterhouse recently completed an MIAA career that saw her go 29-3 against league foes at No. 1 singles. This year, she posted an 8-0 record in MIAA dual match competition while also combining with senior Kaitlin Spoelhof to record an 8-0 record against league teams in doubles play. Oosterhouse was also named to the All-MIAA first team and was joined on the first team by teammate Kaitlin Spoelhof. Calvin senior Michelle Busscher was also named to the All-MIAA second team.
Softball Concludes Season With Doubleheader Loss to Saint Mary’s

Calvin closed out its 2011 campaign by dropping both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Saint Mary’s Saturday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Saint Mary’s took the opener 12-1 and then edged the Knights 2-1 in game two. Calvin closes out its season with an overall record of 6-28 and a league mark of 4-10 in conference play. The Knights finish tied for seventh place in the final MIAA standings.
Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Trine

Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Trine Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field, winning the opener 2-1 before falling in the nightcap 6-5. The Saturday split also gives Calvin a split in the four-game weekend series with the Thunder as the two teams also split two games on Friday. Calvin is now 19-15 overall and in third place in the MIAA standings at 14-10 in league play. The Knights have six games remaining as they will face Aquinas in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Fifth/Third Ballpark and will then face Alma in a four-game weekend series next weekend.
Nick Kramer Shatters Calvin School Record in 5K at Hillsdale Gina Relays

HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams had a big first day of competition at the Hillsdale Gina Relays on Friday. In the women’s 400 meter hurdles, senior Rachel Boerner posted an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:01.67 that ranks as the fastest time in Division III women’s track and field this spring. In the men’s 5,000 meter run later Friday night, junior Nick Kramer not only posted an NCAA III automatic qualifying time in the 5,000 meters invite run, but also shattered the school record in the race with a time of 14:17.70. Kramer’s time shatters the previous Calvin record of 14:22.56 set by Jed Christiansen in 2009. It is also the fastest time in Division III men’s outdoor track and field this spring in the event.
Men’s Tennis To Face Kalamazoo in Finals of MIAA Tournament

ALBION - For the fourth time in the last five years, the Calvin men’s tennis team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals. The Knights advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals with a 6-0 first round win over Adrian and a 5-0 semifinal victory over Hope in the semifinals. Calvin will face top-seeded Kalamazoo in the championship final Saturday at noon with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Team Tournament. Calvin is now 16-7 overall heading into Saturday’s title tilt, scheduled to take place at Albion College.

WEST OLIVE - The Calvin men’s golf team tied rival Hope in the Hope/Calvin Wooden Shoes Challenge Friday morning at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. Both teams finished with 317 strokes. Calvin’s Jess Hendriksma and Hope’s Chris Ansel shared first place with rounds of 74. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomores Ben Kuiper and Dave Sarkipato with rounds of 80 while senior Eric Doezema and freshman Ross Ryzenga had rounds of 83. Calvin will now start preparing to compete at the NCAA III Championships May 10-13 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

KALAMAZOO - Calvin closed out its season by splitting a pair of matches at the MIAA Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo College. Calvin opened the tournament with a 5-4 first round loss to Saint Mary’s. The Knights then defeated Adrian 5-0 in the back draw of the tournament. Calvin finishes its season with an overall record of 9-11.

Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Trine Friday afternoon at Calvin Field, winning the opener 5-4 and falling in game two 7-6. In game one, Calvin threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Trine then returned the favor in game two, throwing out a Calvin runner attempting to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The two teams will play again on Saturday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Calvin Field.
