The Calvin women’s soccer team will host Kalamazoo at 3:00 p.m. in an MIAA Tournament semifinal game next Tuesday. Kalamazoo defeated Hope 1-0 in a first round game on Saturday. Adrian will host Albion in the other semifinal game on Tuesday. Albion advanced in the tournament by winning a penalty kick shootout at Alma 3-2 on Saturday. As the top two seeds in the tournament, Calvin and Adrian received first round byes.

The Calvin men’s soccer team suffered its second consecutive defeat, falling 3-0 at Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo scored a pair of goals in the opening 23 minutes and added an insurance goal in the opening minutes of the second half. The Knights are now 13-4-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the MIAA.

Calvin completed play at the Midwest Challenge with a 4-0 record, defeating Saint Mary’s and Hanover in a pair of three-set matches on Saturday at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. The victory over Saint Mary’s also served as a conference match, allowing the Knights to finish 14-2 in the final league standings, good for a second place conference finish. Calvin will host Saint Mary’s again on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a first round MIAA Tournament match.

ADRIAN, MI—The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams wrapped up MIAA titles on Saturday with perfect scores of 15 points at the MIAA Championships, hosted by Adrian College. In the men’s race, 16th-ranked Calvin took the top five spots including seven of the top nine. On the women’s side, top-ranked Calvin took the top six spots including seven of the top nine. It marks the first time in MIAA history that both a men’s and women’s team has posted a perfect score at the conference meet in the same year.

GRAND RAPIDS—Rebounding from a disappointing loss to Hope on Wednesday, the Knightís strong defense and powerful attack pushed Calvin past Olivet in the 2009 Midwest Challenge. Calvin swept Olivet in three sets, winning 25-14, 25-12, 25-14.
Calvin (22-6 overall, 13-2 MIAA) dominated the Comets at the net, putting up a 12-4 advantage in the block column as well as 42-18 number in kills. Sophomore Rebecca Kamp credited 14 of Calvinís kills to her own name, doing so with a remarkably efficient .500 kill percentage.

Four members of the Calvin women’s soccer team and two members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Honors.
On the women’s side, senior Allison Boender has been named to the Academic All-District IV first team while seniors Kayla Sulzer and Natalie Veurink and junior Elaine Schnabel have been named to the second team.
On the men’s side, seniors Michael Holwerda and Greg Snapper have been named to the Academic All-District IV first team.

After losing the previous match-up at the DeVos Fieldhouse in three sets, the Knights volleyball squad set out to turn the tables against the fifth ranked Flying Dutch of Hope College. In that attempt, Calvin had a record crowd behind them, setting an NCAA III regular season single match attendance record inside of Calvinís Van Noord Arena. Calvin’s bid for a share of the league lead in the MIAA standings came up short on Wednesday night however as the Knights dropped a five-set match to Hope 25-22, 22-25, 25-27, 25-12, 15-6.

(editors note: members of the 1986 National runner-up Calvin volleyball team including head coach Karla Wolters reunite this evening and were recognized in between sets two and three).

Topping a 37-4 season is no easy task for any volleyball team but the 1986 Calvin womenís volleyball team did just that and then some. In 1986, the Knights under the direction of head coach Karla Wolters put together a season like no other team in Calvin or MIAA history before, ripping off a 38-2 campaign that did not end until a heartbreaking five-game loss to the University of California at San Diego in the National Finals. The 38 win total is still a high water mark for any MIAA volleyball team as is the national runner-up finish.

Matched up against rival Hope College Wednesday afternoon, Calvin came out strong on Senior Day in what would be their last home match of the regular season, defeating the Flying Dutch 2-0. The seniors received a nice ovation before the game, highlighting their Calvin soccer careers and the various accolades that have been received over their four years on the team.

As the season winds down, the must-win games decide who will continue on into postseason play. This is now the case for Calvinís menís soccer team after suffering a tough home loss to the Britons of Albion College Tuesday afternoon, a 3-2 slugfest that saw the Knights lose despite outshooting Albion 25-4. The Knights also fell out of first place in the MIAA standings as Hope defeated Alma 2-1, moving one point ahead of Calvin.
