The Calvin women’s cross country shares the top spot in the first set of Division III national rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights share the top spot with defending champion Middlebury (Vt.). The Calvin men’s cross country team is ranked seventh in the men’s national poll with North Central (IL) holding down the top spot.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT—Brad White, a 2005 Calvin College graduate, is making an impressive mark on the professional bicycling circuit. On Wednesday, White earned the 2009 Tour of Utah’s King of the Mountains jersey after an impressive climb through the mountains on the first stage of the five-day, five-stage race. In 2008, his attacking style earned him the Tour of Utah’s sprinter jersey.

he 2009 pre-season Division III Top 25 women’s soccer poll has been released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Calvin is ranked 17th. A year ago, Calvin posted an 18-2-2 overall record and advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the fourth straight year. The Knights return a host of starters and letterwinners from last year’s team. Volleyball Team Ranked 16th in AVCA Division III Top 25 pre-season poll

The 2009 pre-season Division III Top 25 women’s volleyball poll has been released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Calvin is ranked 16th. A year ago, Calvin posted a 26-5 overall record and advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. The Knights return four starters and 11 letterwinners from last year’s team which finished second in the MIAA standings with a 14-2 conference record.
Former Calvin Softball Player Throws Out First Pitch At Pirates-Cardinals Game at PNC Park

During her four years on the Calvin softball team, Loren Scarbrough faced many pressure-packed moments as a fulltime infield starter. None of those moments, she said, could compare to what she faced on August 8 when she was chosen to throw out the first pitch in front of a sell-out crowd of 38,593 fans prior to a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park.
Adorned in a Pirates jersey, Scarbrough responded to the moment in fine fashion, zipping a pitch over the inside corner. The fiery fastball drew a standing ovation from the crowd - listed as the seventh-largest in PNC Park history.
Calvin Tennis Teams/Players Receive ITA All-Academic Honors

The Calvin men’s and women’s tennis teams have received the the prestigious All-Academic Team Award from the International Tennis Association (ITA). The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). The men’s team is doing so for the sixth straight year while the women’s team is doing so for the second straight season.
Calvin College Names Bret Otte Men’s/Women’s Head Track & Field Coach

GRAND RAPIDS—Calvin College has named Bret Otte as its head men’s and women’s track and field coach. Otte has spent the last 11 years serving as head men’s and women’s cross country coach and head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Otte replaces Dr. Jong-il Kim who has decided to step down as Calvin’s head men’s and women’s track and field coach to devote more time to his teaching as an associate professor in Calvin’s Health, Physical Education, Recreation Dance and Sport department and coaching of specific events as a coach with Calvin’s track and field program. Kim will remain as an assistant coach with both Calvin teams. Kim will also continue to serve as an assistant coach with the Calvin women’s soccer team and as an associate professor in Calvin’s HPERD’s department.

The challenge surrounding the 2008 Calvin team was to find a way to replace the graduation of three All-Americans. After producing a 26-5 campaign in 2008 that included a fifth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament, the challenge surrounding the 2009 Calvin squad is to simply keep the momentum rolling.
