Former Sports Information Student Assistants Receive Awards From MIAA

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the winners of two awards honoring outstanding publicity efforts by its member schools - the Hartman Writing Award and the Renner Associate SID Award.
Chaz Amidon, a student assistant in the Calvin College sports information director, was named the winner of the Hartman Award, while Bruce Van Baren, also a student assistant in Calvin’s SID office, was named the recipient of the Renner Award.
Women’s Basketball Receives Academic Honors From WBCA - Places Fifth on NCAA III List

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced its 2008-2009 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior college/Community College and Calvin College is one of 25 Division III schools that have been so honored. The awards recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2008-2009 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.
Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Calvin women’s basketball team compiled a 3.503 cumulative grade point average, leaving the Knights ranked fith on the list of 25 Division III teams that made the honor roll. This is the fourth straight year that Calvin has received the honor.
Calvin Track & Field Teams/Athletes Receive Academic Honors From USTFCCA

For the ninth straight year, the Calvin women’s track and field team has received the all-academic team award from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Calvin men’s track and field team has also received the award.
Teams were eligible for the for honor if they had a minimum of 14 members who participated in the 2008 outdoor season and recorded a minimum 3.00 (4.00 scale) cumulative grade point average as a group. The Calvin women’s track and field team posted a 3.594 cumulative grade point average, ranking fifth among 100 teams that were so honored. The Calvin men’s track and field team posted a 3.238.

A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.
Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.
