GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin women’s basketball team found itself in a familiar place Saturday afternoon – in overtime. Unfortunately the Knights were unable to come out on top, falling 72-68 to Alma in an overtime decision inside Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.

ANGOLA, IN – The injury bug, which had been dormant for the previous three seasons, has bitten the Knights throughout the 2008-2009 MIAA campaign.
“I don’t think that people realize how hard it is to go without somebody that you’ve played with, practiced with and set your substitution rotation accordingly,” coach Kevin Vande Streek said.

ANGOLA, IN—Calvin knocked down clutch free throws to preserve an 82-80 win at Trine in first game of the second round through the MIAA schedule. The Knights won their third straight game to hold on to a share of first place in the MIAA.

GRAND RAPIDS – Matt Veltema has been even more productive in Calvin’s starting lineup than he has off the bench, but he claims that nothing has changed since last week.
Nothing, except for a few more open shots.
After pouring in a career-best 21 points in a win over Albion on Saturday, Veltema set a new personal record by totaling 23 points in the Knights’ 74-60 win over Kalamazoo on Wednesday, jump-starting a fresh win streak for a Calvin team that dropped its previous contest at Van Noord Arena.

Sarah Partridge (East Lansing HS) hit a three-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining to force overtime against first-place Saint Mary’s Wednesday night at VanNoord Arena, but the Knights fell to the Belles 72-68 in overtime.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Teams Compete At GVSU Eubanks Invitational

ALLENDALE – The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their indoor campaigns on Friday night at the Grand Valley State Eubanks Invitational.
A highlight of the meet for Calvin was the performance of senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) who won the mile run with an NCAA III (indoor) conditional qualifying time of 4:55.01, just missing an automatic qualifying time.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI—The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed an historic afternoon Saturday, hosting their first-ever dual meets inside the Venema Aquatic Center. Fittingly, the first competition was held against rival Hope with the Calvin women defeating the Hope women’s team 179-127 while the Calvin men were defeated by the Hope men’s team 171-95.
A standing room only crowd of more than 500 spectators was treated to a thrilling dual meet which began with opening remarks from Calvin president Dr. Gaylen Byker and the lead donor for the facility - Thelma Venema.

GRAND RAPIDS – The Knights began their 2008-09 season by totaling only 10 3-pointers in their first three games.
Now, with a new-found proficiency from the perimeter, Calvin is getting used to drilling around 10 long balls per contest.
Unleashing a torrent of 3-pointers in the opening minutes on Saturday, the Knights jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead against Kalamazoo and would not slow down, defeating the Hornets 66-40.

ALBION – The Calvin men’s basketball team dug down deep for a key conference victory on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating Albion 79-73 at Kresge Gymnasium to remain in first place in the MIAA standings.
The victory also allowed Calvin men’s basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek to become the all-time leader in coaching victories as he boosted his Calvin coaching record to 255-101 to move past Ed Douma who recorded 254 victories at Calvin from 1984-to-1996.
Three-Point Blitz Propels Women’s Basketball Team To Win at Olivet

OLIVET – The Calvin women’s basketball team used a three-point blitz to secure an 81-63 victory at Olivet’s Cutler Event Center. The Knights (9-6 overall, 404 MIAA) connected on 14 of 28 from three-point range including 11 of 19 in the first half as the Knights jumped out to a 46-23 halftime lead.
