Men’s Lacrosse Picks up 12-5 Win over Houghton College of New York

STOW, OH – The Calvin men’s lacrosse team picked up its second victory of the year, defeating Houghton College of New York Saturday afternoon in a game played at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. Calvin is now 2-4 on the year. Junior Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Chris Griffin (Howell/Hartland HS) had three goals apiece. Freshman Joel Schaefer (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS), freshman Mikal Wessell (Oviedo, FL/Ovideo HS) and junior Jonathon VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two goals apiece. Senior Jon Ptashnick (New Baltimore, MD/Anchor Bay HS) had eight ground balls while junior Luke Bosscher (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had five. Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had seven saves for the Knights.Calvin is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Methodist College (NC) for a 4 p.m. game.

Men’s Lacrosse Falls at Elmhurst 9-0

ELMHURST, IL - Calvin dipped to 1-3 on the year with a 9-0 loss at Elmhurst College Saturday afternoon. Elmhurst led 6-0 at halftime and then held off the Knights throughout the second half. Elmhurst held a commanding 39-12 shots at goal advantage. Calvin committed 34 turnovers in the loss and won just 4-of-13 faceoffs. Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had five saves in goal for the Knights. Calvin is back in action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a non-conference game slated to start at 7 p.m.

Chris Griffin Named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in Men’s Lacrosse

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin attacker Chris Griffin and Albion midfielder Cameron Clements its Players of the Week in men’s lacrosse for games played through March 1. Griffin is the Offensive Player of the Week while Clements is the Defensive Player of the Week. Griffin, a freshman from Howell (Hartland HS), set a Calvin school record with seven points, including four goals, in a 15-1 victory over Defiance, Ohio. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career. He is also the first player in Calvin men’s lacrosse history to receive MIAA Player of the Week honors. Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Elmhurst for a game slated to start at 2 p.m. (EST).

Men’s Lacrosse Rolls to 15-1 Victory at Defiance College

DEFIANCE, OH – The Calvin men’s lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the young season and the third win in program history with a 15-1 win at Defiance College Saturday afternoon. The game marked Calvin’s largest margin of victory at the varsity level. Calvin led 5-0 at halftime, 8-1 after three quarters of play and then exploded for eight goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Freshman Chris Griffin (Howell/Hartland HS) led the charge with four goals and three assists, setting a Calvin single-game record for most points (7) in a game. Freshman Jake Hortsman (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was also stellar in the middle, winning 10 of 15 face offs. Senior Casey Harless (Dewitt/Dewitt HS) had five saves in goal for the Knights. Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Elmhurst for a 2 p.m. (EST) game.

Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Benedictine 14-2

LISLE, IL – Calvin dipped to 0-2 on the year with a 14-2 loss at Benedictine University Saturday afternoon.Benedictine led 6-0 at halftime and then outscored Calvin 6-0 in the third quarter to seal the win. Benedictine outshot Calvin 43-30. The Knights received goals from freshman Andrew Haan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and freshman Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS). Haan and junior Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were also credited with one assist apiece. Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 15 saves in goal for the Knights. Sophomore Tyler DeKryger (Cadillac/Cadillac HS) scooped up 12 ground balls for Calvin while Schaefer was 3-for-6 on faceoff opportunities. Calvin will now prepare to face Defiance College next Saturday at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Grand Rapids but will now be played in Ohio because of more favorable field conditions.

Men’s Lacrosse Drops 23-1 Decision to Carthage College in Season Opener

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Calvin men’s lacrosse team opened its 2014 campaign with a non-conference game against the Red Men of Carthage College Friday morning at the Pontiac Ultimate Soccer Arena. Calvin dropped Friday’s contest 23-1. Freshman Andrew Haan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had the lone goal for the Knights. Calvin is back in action on February 22 when it travels to Benedictine (IL) for a 2 p.m. (EST) game.

2014 Calvin Men's Lacrosse Schedule

The Calvin men’s lacrosse season will kick off on Saturday when the Knights take on Carthage College at 11 a.m. in Pontiac, Michigan. Under the direction of head coach Joel Kamstra, the youthful Knights are in their second year as a varsity program. A year ago Calvin finished 2-13 overall but is looking for improvement in 2014. The Calvin Sports Information Office caught up with Kamstra earlier this week and produced an interview that previews the upcoming season. Calvin Men’s Lacrosse Picked to Finish Sixth in MIAA Preseason Poll

2014 Calvin Men's Lacrosse Schedule

The Calvin men’s lacrosse team has been picked to finish sixth in the MIAA preseason lacrosse poll conducted by the league coaches. Calvin and Alma share sixth place in the poll with 33 points each. Defending league champion Adrian is the preseason pick to win the league. The Bulldogs received six first place votes. A year ago, Calvin finished 2-13 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA. Calvin is scheduled to open its 2014 campaign on February 7 when it competes against Carthage in a non-conference game in Pontiac, Michigan. Calvin will open its MIAA schedule on April 2 when it travels to Adrian for a 7 p.m. game.

MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Calvin Scholar-Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll

The 2012-13 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and a record 151 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2012-13 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, seven are from Calvin.The seven Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Eric Doornbos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Matt DeBoer (Hudsonville, MI/Covenant Christian HS), Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), Kelsey Irwin (Fraser, MI, /Fraser HS), Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) and Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS).
