Calvin Takes Over Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Lead

Learfield Director's Cup Division III Standings for 12-6-12
The latest set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin has taken over the lead with 308.50 points. The latest set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury (Vt.) is in second with 306.5 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships. In addition, Calvin picked up 50 points from its women’s soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament and 25 points from its men’s soccer team that reached the first round of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin had been in second place in the first set of standings released two weeks ago but has since moved up to first place due to points gained through its men’s and women’s soccer teams.

NSCAA Division III All-Central Region Teams
Two members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have received Division III All-Central Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Senior Francesca Smith has been named to the Division III All-Central Region second team while junior Danielle Carter has been named to the third team. A midfielder, Smith hails from Bloomington, Indiana. She is a graduate of Bloomington South High School. She is receiving all-region honors for the second time as she was a third team all-region choice in 2010. This fall, Smith tallied five goals, five assists and 15 points while landing a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year. A four-year starter in midfield, Smith accumulated 18 goals and 20 assists during her Calvin career for a total of 56 points.
A native of DeWitt and a graduate of DeWitt High School, Carter was also a part of Calvin’s midfield attack this fall. She tallied a career-high eight goals this fall while also assisting on four others. Of her eight goals, four were game-winners including an overtime strike in a 1-0 win at Saint Mary’s in September and a memorable score with just one second left in the first overtime of a 2-1 win over Hope in the MIAA Tournament final. Carter was also named to the All-MIAA first team this fall. Heading into her senior year of play, she has amassed 15 goals, eight assists and 38 points.

The first set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin is currently in second place with 233.50 points. The first set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury leads the standings with 256.50 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships last weekend. The Learfield Director’s Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.
Women’s Soccer Falls to Loras in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

A night after upsetting Aurora University in the first round of the Division III national tournament, the Calvin women’s soccer team looked to upset host Loras College Saturday night in Dubuque, Iowa. Unfortunately, Calvin fell to Loras 4-2. The loss is the final game in the careers of seniors Francesca Smith and Liz Cancel. The women’s soccer team finishes the year 16-5-1. Calvin was the MIAA regular season and tournament champion despite being picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll.
Calvin Women’s Soccer Upsets Aurora University 1-0 in Overtime in First Round NCAA III Tourney Match

Traveling to Dubuque, Iowa to face Aurora University, the Calvin College women’s soccer team had their work cut out for them as they faced the 19-1-1 Spartans. Aurora entered the match ranked 13th nationally in one poll and 22nd in another. Playing strong defense and shutting down the Aurora offense, Calvin earned a 1-0 overtime win with a goal just 19 seconds into the first overtime from freshman Paige Capel. Calvin will now face host Loras tomorrow at 6 p.m. Loras defeated its first round opponent St. Scholastica 4-1 in the first game on Friday.

2012 Women's Soccer All-MIAA Teams
ROYAL OAK - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has released its All-MIAA First and Second Teams in women’s soccer. Four Knights earned All-MIAA honors. Senior Francesca Smith, junior Danielle Carter and freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel were named to the All-MIAA First Team. Freshmen Sydney Kinney was named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
Women’s Soccer Headed to Loras for NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin College women’s soccer team will travel to Loras (Iowa) for an NCAA III Tournament first round game with Aurora (Ill.). Aurora comes into the game with a 19-1-1 record. The other matchup will feature host Loras (17-4) against St. Scholastica of Minnesota (17-4-1). Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for college students and senior citizens. Calvin will face Aurora at 7:30 p.m. CST with the first game being played at 5:00 p.m. CST. Calvin (15-4-1) is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA III Tournament under head coach Mark Recker and ninth overall. The Knights are 7-3-5 all-time in the NCAA III Tournament and have advanced to the national quarterfinals twice in school history (2006 and 2009). The Knights won the MIAA regular season title this year finishing 12-3-1 in league play.
Late Comeback Fuels Calvin Women’s Soccer to MIAA Tournament Championship Victory

A third match between rivals Calvin and Hope in women’s soccer turned out to be a winner-take-all as the teams met in the MIAA Tournament Final. The winner of the contest would earn the MIAA’s automatic qualifying bid for the NCAA tournament. In the end, a pair of late goals from Calvin, one near the end of regulation and a second at the end of the first overtime, gave the Knights the 2-1 win and the MIAA Tournament Championship. Calvin ends the regular season 15-4-1overall. Hope dropped to 14-6-2 on the year with the loss. With the automatic bid, Calvin will return to play next weekend at a location to be determined. The NCAA selection show for the Division III Women’s Soccer bracket will take place on Monday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Calvin Advances to MIAA Tournament Finals with 1-0 Win Over Adrian

.Just two days after defeating Adrian 2-1 in overtime to claim the top seed for the MIAA tournament, it was the Bulldogs who once again stood in the way of the Knights as Calvin had to beat Adrian to earn a berth in the MIAA tournament final Saturday afternoon. In the first semifinal game of the day, it was Hope defeating Alma 3-2 to earn the first berth into the final. Calvin, with an early goal from freshman Taylor TenHarmsel, earned the second as strong defense from the Knights gave them a 1-0 victory and a third game against the rival Flying Dutch.
