What a day for the Heethuis family.

On Saturday, Calvin junior striker Brad Heethuis scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Hope that allowed the Knights to capture their consecutive MIAA title and gain an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Meanwhile, Brad’s father Randy Heethuis was busy leading his Unity Christian boys soccer team to a Division II state title Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders defeated Petoskey 2-0 in the championship game.

Randy Heethuis is a 1984 Calvin College graduate who was a member of Calvin’s 1981 and 1982 MIAA championship men’s soccer teams.

GRAND RAPIDS—In what could be called the game of the year so far for Calvin Saturday afternoon at Grand Rapids Christian High School, the Knights added another chapter in their rivalry with Hope by defeating the Flying Dutch 1-0, capturing their third straight MIAA title and obtaining an automatic bid to the national tournament.

Directions to G.R. Christian High School

ANGOLA, IN—An MIAA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament will be on the line Saturday afternoon when Calvin and Hope meet in men’s soccer at 2:30 p.m. at Eagle Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Hope has 30 points in league play while Calvin has 28 points. A victory by Calvin would give Calvin the outright title. A tie or a Hope victory would give the Flying Dutchmen the outright title. The winner of the MIAA will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Hope is currently ranked fifth in the most recent set of Central Region rankings, released this afternoon while Calvin is ranked sixth.

Saturday’s game between Calvin and Hope has been moved to Grand Rapids Christian High School because of poor field conditions at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
