Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin.  This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

Six Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award

MIAA Team GPA Award List

The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year.  This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale).  During the recently completed 2011-12 school year, six of Calvin’s athletic teams achieved this distinction. Five of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the men’s cross country team also achieved the feat.  Calvin’s teams receiving the honor are as follows; women’s cross country team, women’s track and field team, women’s basketball team, women’s volleyball team, women’s tennis team, and men’s cross country team.

Calvin Lands 123 Scholar-Athletes on MIAA Academic Honor Roll

2011-12 MIAA Academic Honor Roll

The 2011-12 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 123 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.

Women’s Tennis Team Receives ITA All-Academic Award

For the fifth consecutive year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has received the ITA All-Academic Award. All five awards have come under current head coach Jerry Bergsma. In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2011-12 academic year. In addition five members of the Calvin women’s team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete academic honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the 2010-11 academic year. The five individuals from Calvin are junior Jordan Ipema, sophomores Emily Swets and Tina Geelhoed and freshmen Samantha Reitsma and Megan Visser.

Calvin Summer Knightfile Magazine

The latest edition of Calvin’s Knightfile Magazine is now online. The edition features Calvin’s recently completed spring sports season headlined by a look at Calvin’s long-standing steeplechase tradition in track and field. Other sports covered include men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball. This spring, Calvin senior Nick Kramer captured the national championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Megan Visser Receives All-MIAA Second Team Honors

Calvin College freshman Megan Visser has been named to the All-MIAA second team in women’s tennis. A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Visser filled the No. 1 singles spot for Calvin this spring and went 3-5 against league opponents. She also played at No. 1 doubles and went 4-4 against league opponents. Visser was part of a youthful Calvin women’s tennis team that finished 7-13 overall this spring and in fourth place in the final MIAA regular season standings with a 5-3 league record. The Knights later qualified for the four-team MIAA Tournament before bowing to eventual tournament champion Hope.

HOLLAND - The Calvin women’s tennis team saw its season come to an end on Thursday as the Knights were defeated by Hope 5-0 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. A youthful Calvin team concludes its season with a final overall record of 7-13.

Women’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season With 7-2 Win Over Trine

With fourth place in the MIAA all wrapped up for the conference tournament, the Knights looked to finish off their regular season with a win as they hosted Trine Saturday afternoon at the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center.  Calvin did just that, defeating the visiting Thunder 7-2. The 7-2 win moves the Knights MIAA record to 5-3 and their overall record to 7-12. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Tournament where it will face first-seeded Hope, who is 8-0 in conference, in the opening round next week Thursday. The Knights lost their regular season match against Hope 8-1.

Women’s Tennis Defeated by Hope

HOLLAND - Calvin dropped an 8-1 decision to league-leading Hope Tuesday afternoon at Holland Christian High School. The loss drops Calvin to 6-12 overall and to 4-3 in the MIAA. Calvin will close out its MIAA regular season on Saturday when it hosts Trine at 1 p.m. In the loss to Hope on Saturday, Calvin battled the Flying Dutch on fairly even terms in doubles play, losing all three points but losing by scores of 8-6 (No. 1), 8-5 (No. 2) and 8-4 (No. 3). Hope (15-7 overall, 7-0 MIAA) then took control in singles play, winning the top five singles flights including four flights where Calvin won just a combined seven games. Calvin’s lone win came from freshman Ali Roode (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) at No. 6 singles as she claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win to boost her season record to 15-3 in singles play.
