Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Ranked 18th in College Swim Coaches Association Poll

CSCAA Division III Rankings - 12-13-12
The latest set of Division III Top 20 rankings as conducted by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America has been released and the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is ranked 18th. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division 3 Swimming and Diving Team Rankings are voted on by six CSCAA member coaches. The rankings will be released three times during 2012-13 season. The Calvin women’s team is now ranked in two national polls as it is also ranked 16th in the most recent Collegeswimming.com Top 25 poll.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will head into Christmas break holding national rankings. In the most recent set of Division III Top 25 polls conducted by Collegeswimming.com, the Calvin women’s team is ranked 16th while the Calvin men’s team is ranked 20th. Both teams are coming off of solid performances at the Calvin Winter Invitational last weekend. Both teams took fourth place in a field filled with Division II competition and several other Division III schools. Calvin will spend part of its post-exam Christmas break training for a week in Coral Springs, Florida.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams Take Fourth Place at Calvin Winter Invitational

The Calvin Winter Invitational concluded Saturday evening after its third day of competition. Another strong day in the pool for the Knights saw a number of top finishes as both teams took fourth in the final team standings. On the women’s side, sophomore Erika Waugh established a new school record in the women’s 200 backstroke with a second place and NCAA III B’ cut time of 2:05.59. Senior Samanthan Klaasen won the one-meter diving competition while freshman Michaela Rookus took home a win in the 200 IM. Senior Elizabeth Counsell also had a strong second place finish in the 200 breaststroke. On the men’s side, senior Mark Rushlow highlighted the day, placing second in the 100 butterfly. His morning prelim time of 49.91 was an NCAA B’ cut time.

In a long morning and early afternoon of prelims on Friday, Calvin saw nine individuals advance to the finals in 12 events. Despite a strong day in the pool, the women are in fourth place with 242 points while the men dropped from second to fourth with 263 points. Northern Michigan held its lead on the women’s side with 348 points while Grand Valley kept the top spot on the men’s side with 423 points. The Calvin women had two first place performances as senior Elizabeth Counsell won the 100 breaststroke and senior Samantha Klaasen won the three-meter board with a score of 438.65 points.

Calvin’s three-day Winter Invitational began Thursday evening. Teams participating included Division I Valparaiso University, Division II schools Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University and University of Indianapolis as well as MIAA schools Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s and fellow Division III school Wabash College. The Calvin women head into day two in fifth place with 49 points. Northern Michigan leads with 91 total points. The Calvin men are in second after the first day of competition with 75 points, Grand Valley leads with 127. The biggest highlight for Calvin came on the men’s side as freshman Caleb Meinderstma shattered the Calvin men’s 1650 yard freestyle record by swimming a 16:16.47, good for second individually. The previous record was held by Brad Flikkema, set in 1998 at 16:28.80. Freshman Aaron Venema was barely off that record time, swimming to a fourth place time of 16:31.06. Senior Mathias Bares added points for the Knights, finishing in 14th overall at 17:03.35.

Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.
Klaasen Named MIAA Athlete of the Week

Calvin’s Samantha Klaasen, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), secured a spot in next March’s NCAA regionals in one-meter diving Friday with a score of 258.14 points in a nonconference meet against NCAA Division II power Wayne State. Klaasen is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.

DETROIT – The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were both defeated by Division II Wayne State University in non-conference dual meet action Saturday night. In the men’s meet, Calvin was defeated 159-77. In the women’s meet, Calvin fell by a 149-89 score. In the women’s meet, sophomore Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) won the 1,650 freestyle (18:02.50) while freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50). Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay team of senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA), senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS), freshman Leah Meyer (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and Wrobel won in a time of 1:43.91. On the men’s side, freshman Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) captured a win in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:52.76. Sophomore Travis Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) also won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.49). Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay team of Venema, freshman Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS), freshman Tyler Ligon (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won in a time of 1:31.33.
Both teams will now prepare to host their own Calvin Winter Invitational November 29-to-December 1.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams continue to rise in the Division III national rankings. The Calvin women’s team is ranked 11th - up four spots from a week ago in the most recent Collegeswimming.com Division III Top 25 poll. On the men’s side, Calvin is ranked 16th - up nine spots from a week ago. Both teams are competing in non-conference dual meet action this evening at Division II Wayne State University.
