Calvin Takes Over Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Lead

Learfield Director's Cup Division III Standings for 12-6-12
The latest set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin has taken over the lead with 308.50 points. The latest set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury (Vt.) is in second with 306.5 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships. In addition, Calvin picked up 50 points from its women’s soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament and 25 points from its men’s soccer team that reached the first round of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin had been in second place in the first set of standings released two weeks ago but has since moved up to first place due to points gained through its men’s and women’s soccer teams.

The first set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin is currently in second place with 233.50 points. The first set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury leads the standings with 256.50 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships last weekend. The Learfield Director’s Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.

TERRE HAUTE, IN - The Calvin men’s cross country team’s bid for a national championship came up just short on Saturday as the Knights took second place at the NCAA III Championships, just 21 points behind national champion North Central. With 1000 meters left to go, Calvin held a 34-point lead on the automatic chip timing board but the Knights were unable to hang on down the stretch as second-ranked North Central came up with a big stretch finish. Calvin’s total of 188 points was led by All-Americans Nick Kramer and Job Christiansen as Kramer was 26th and Christiansen 35th. On the women’s side, Calvin took 18th with 413 points. Sophomore Kate Ardinger was Calvin’s top finisher, placing 100th.

Calvin College head cross country coach Brian Diemer has been named the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. Diemer, in his 27th season, led the Knights to their 26th-consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title this fall. The third-ranked Calvin men also captured their 17th straight regional crown last Saturday. Calvin will compete at the NCAA III Championships this Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana. The races will begin at 11 a.m. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will serve as the host institution. Diemer will be leading both the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams at the national meet on Saturday. Combined, Diemer has now led the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams to 32 MIAA titles which ranks second on the all-time MIAA list for championships, trailing only the 35 won by George Acker of Kalamazoo College in men’s tennis. Saturday’s races will feature a live video webcast. Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams are preparing to compete at the NCAA III Championships this Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Calvin men’s cross country team will enter the national finals ranked third nationally while the Calvin women’s cross country team is ranked 15th. The Calvin Sports Information office caught up with head Calvin cross country coach Brian Diemer and assistant coach Al Hoekstra for their insights on the upcoming national meet. Women’s Cross Country Team Receives At-Large Berth to NCAA III Championships

NCAA III Cross Country Championships Announcement
The Calvin women’s cross country team is headed back to the NCAA III Championships. The Knights received an at-large berth when the official championship field was announced this afternoon. The Calvin women will be making their 23rd appearance at the NCAA III Championships which ranks third on the all-time NCAA III women’s cross country list for team appearances. It also marks the eighth straight year that the Calvin women have earned a berth to the national meet. At the Great Lakes Regional meet on Saturday, Calvin took third with 105 points behind second place Oberlin (95 points) and first place Hope (91 points). Only the top two teams at the regional meet receive automatic berths to the national meet while teams finishing in spots 3-to-5 are eligible for at-large selection.The Calvin men’s cross country team will also be competing at the national meet next Saturday. The Calvin men took first place at Saturday’s Great Lakes Regional - hosted by Anderson University - with 36 points. Next Saturday’s national meet is scheduled to be held in Terre Haute, Indiana. Rose-Hulman Institute will serve as the host institution.

Calvin Men’s Cross Country Team Captures Regional Title/Women’s Team Places Third

ANDERSON, IN - The second-ranked Calvin men’s cross country team captured a Great Lakes Regional title on Saturday with a first place score of 36 points. The win advances the Knights to next week’s NCAA III Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Great Lakes Regional title is the 17th consecutive regional crown for the Calvin men. Calvin will be making its 28th appearance at the national meet in men’s cross country which ranks third on the all-time NCAA III list. Meanwhile the fifth-ranked Calvin women’s cross country team took third with 103 points. Hope took first place with 91 points with Oberlin second with 95 points. The top two teams receive automatic spots to the NCAA III Championships while the next three teams are eligible for at-large consideration. The Calvin women’s cross country team will now have to wait until Sunday to see if it receives an at-large bid.

USTFCCCA Division III Cross Country National Rankings
The Calvin women’s cross country team has moved up to number five in the latest Division III National Poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. Meanwhile, the Calvin men’s team is once again ranked second in the men’s poll and received two first place votes. Haverford is the top-ranked team in the men’s poll and received the other six first place votes.Both Calvin cross country teams are preparing for the NCAA III Regional meet on November 10 at Anderson (IN) University. Calvin currently has seven teams nationally ranked. In addition to its cross country teams, its men’s soccer team is ranked 22nd, its women’s volleyball team is ranked second, its women’s basketball team is ranked number one, its women’s swimming and diving team is ranked 15th and its men’s swimming and diving team is ranked 25th.
Calvin’s Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen Receive MIAA Runner of the Week Accolades

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen as its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through Oct. 27.Kerr, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), won the MIAA championship meet for the second consecutive year Saturday at Whiffle Tree Golf Club in Concord, covering the 8-kilometer course in 24:37. He finished 12 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor as he lead Calvin to its 26th consecutive MIAA men’s cross country championship. Kerr is being honored as Runner of the Week for the third time this season and fourth time in his career.
Michmerhuizen, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), took first place in Saturday’s MIAA championship meet at Whiffle Tree Golf Club in Concord by 17 seconds, completing the 6-kilometer course in 21:49. Her performance led the Knights to the MIAA championship. Michmerhuizen is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time this season and in her career.
