MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Women’s Golf Finishes Third in Final MIAA Standings For Best-Ever League Finish

BATTLE CREEK – For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women’s golf team is headed to the MIAA Spring Tournament. Calvin finished fourth at the two-day, 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament on Saturday but also placed third in the final league standings – its highest regular season league finish in school history. Calvin posted a two-day team total of 679 strokes at the weekend tournament, hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley country Club. Calvin shot 341 on Friday and came back with a score of 338 on Saturday to finish three strokes behind Trine over the weekend. The Knights did finish 27 strokes ahead of Trine in the overall MIAA fall standings however. Senior Carlia Canto shared weekend medalist honors and finished in second place in the final MIAA individual standings. She earns a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year. Sophomores Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) and Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) were both named to the All-MIAA second team.

Canto is Medalist on Day One of MIAA Fall Tournament - Knights Fourth Through Day One

BATTLE CREEK – The Calvin women’s golf team is in fourth place on the first day of the two-day, 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament but the Knights remain in third place in the overall MIAA standings. Calvin fired a team score of 341 strokes. The tournament is being hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club. The Knights remain 23 strokes ahead of fourth place Trine in the overall team standings. The top four teams in the final MIAA standings will qualify for the MIAA Spring Tournament which is used to determine the MIAA’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had a tremendous performance on Friday, earning medalist honors with a career-best score of 73. Canto is now just two strokes out of first place in the overall MIAA individual standings with Saturday’s final round to be played Saturday morning.

Carlia Canto Named MIAA Women’s Golfer of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Carlia Canto its Golfer of the Week in women’s golf for matches through Oct. 6. Canto, a senior from Marysville (Port Huron Northern HS), won medalist honors with a course-record 73 at the MIAA Jamboree at Trine’s Zollner Golf Course. She also shot an 85 to finish eighth at the Jamboree hosted by Calvin earlier in the week at Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. Canto is being honored as Golfer of the Week for the first time this season and third time in her career. Canto is currently third in the MIAA individual standings overall. The Knights are back in action on Friday and Saturday, competing at the MIAA Fall Tournament at the Bedford Valley Country Club.

ANGOLA, IN – The Calvin women’s golf team finished in a tie for third at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine University on Saturday at the Zollner Golf club and in doing so, remains in third place in the overall MIAA team standings. Calvin shared third place with Hope on Saturday with a team score of 341. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had a superb afternoon for Calvin, claiming medalist honors with a round of 73. It marks the first time that Canto has earned medalist honors in an MIAA competition. Canto currently sits in third place in the overall MIAA individual standings. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) was next for Calvin with an 83 while sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had a 92. Sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) had a 93 and sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) a 96. Calvin will now prepare for the 36-hole MIAA (Fall) Tournament which will be a part of the six-round total score in the final MIAA fall standings. The MIAA Tournament will take place next Friday and Saturday at the Bedford Valley Country Club with Olivet College serving as host.

Women’s Golf Takes Fourth at MIAA Jamboree at Thornapple Pointe

ADA – The Calvin women’s golf team hosted MIAA Jamboree #3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. The Knights took fourth at the competition with a team score of 348, just one stroke behind third place Trine and 12 strokes ahead of fifth place Hope. The Knights remain in third place in the overall MIAA standings with three total rounds left to play in the conference fall slate. The Knights are 27 strokes ahead of Trine and 29 ahead of Hope heading into a Saturday Jamboree which will be hosted by Trine at the Zollner Golf Club at 1 p.m. In Wednesday’s Jamboree, sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) led Calvin with an 84 that was good for a tie for sixth place individually. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had an 85 that tied her for eighth place. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 88 followed by sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) with a 91 and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) with a 94.

Calvin Women’s Golf Take Third at MIAA Jamboree #2

KALAMAZOO - After two MIAA competitions, Calvin remains in third place in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights took third at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club on Saturday with a team score of 349. In doing so, the Knights remained ahead of rival Hope, widening the gap to 17 strokes as the Flying Dutch finished four strokes behind Calvin on Saturday with a fourth place team score of 353. Olivet continued to hold command of first place in the MIAA standings, taking first place on Saturday with a score of 321 while Saint Mary’s was second at 336. Olivet has a 27-stroke lead now over Saint Mary’s in the overall team standings.In Saturday’s round, Calvin was once again paced by senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) who tied for fourth individually with a round of 81. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) tied for 11th individually with a score of 86.
Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with an 89, sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) with a 93 and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) with a 100.

Women’s Golf Third at Opening MIAA Jamboree

MARSHALL – The Calvin women’s golf team had a solid start to its MIAA fall campaign, placing third at the opening MIAA Jamboree with a team score of 347 strokes. Olivet took first with a team score of 329 with Saint Mary’s second at 341 followed by Calvin. Hope was fourth with a team score of 360. Tuesday’s tournament was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club. Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had a strong match for the Knights with a round of 80 which was good for second place individually.  Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had a stellar outing as well for Calvin, firing a round of 85 while sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 89.

BYRON CENTER - The Calvin women’s golf team played host to the Calvin/Hope Challenge on Saturday at the Railside Golf Club. The Knights took fourth in a four team field with a team score of 357 strokes, one stroke behind Hope. The tournament also featured two teams from the CCIW in North Central and Wheaton (IL). North Central won the tournament with a score of 331 with Wheaton second at 341. Calvin senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was the top finisher for the Knights, placing seventh with a round of 86. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 88 as did sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School). Calvin is back in action on September 24 when it competes at an MIAA Tournament hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.

Women’s Golf Ties For Fourth Place at North Central Invitational

NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin women’s golf team tie for fourth place at the North Central College Invitational on Tuesday with a team score of 348. Host North Central took first place with a team score of 327. Calvin’s top individual finisher was senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) who tied for ninth with a round of 84. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) was just two strokes back with an 86 while sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had an 87. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) with a 91, sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) with a 96 and freshman Mackenzie Geels (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS) with a 106. Kayla Meyer of Carthage took home medalist honors with a 78. Calvin is back in action on September 21 when it hosts an invitational at Railside Golf Club in Byron Center.
