Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin women’s golf team took third place at the MIAA Fall Tournament with a team score of 695 strokes. It marked Calvin’s best-ever finish at the tournament. Calvin finished one stroke ahead of rival Hope at the tournament and finished fourth in the final MIAA fall standings.Olivet defended its MIAA fall title from a year ago, finishing with a two-day first place total of 659 strokes while Saint Mary’s was second with 680 strokes. The 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament makes up the final two rounds of the six-round MIAA fall season.In finishing fourth in the final league standings, Calvin once again qualifies for the four-team MIAA Spring Tournament which determines the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.Junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was again the catalyst for the Knights, shooting a two-day total of 161 (79-82) that left her in second place in the final tournament standings. Canto earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the second straight year and also finished third in the final MIAA overall fall standings to land a spot on the All-MIAA first team. Canto finished the fall season with an average of 81.2 strokes-per-round, breaking her own school (season) record of 82.7 set a year ago.

BATTLE CREEK - Through one day of competition at the 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament, Calvin is in fourth place with a team score of 349 strokes. The score also leaves Calvin in firm possession of fourth place in the overall MIAA standings as the Knights close in on their second straight qualifying berth to next spring’s MIAA NCAA III Qualifying Tournament.Olivet was first with 323 strokes while Hope and Saint Mary’s shared second place with scores of 349.Calvin was led by junior Carlia Canto who fired a first-day round of 79 that leaves her in a tie for second place individually. Senior Elise Doezema had an 86 (13th) while freshman Casey Harkema had a 90, freshman Jennie Poole a 94 and freshman Sarah Arendsen a 99. Adrienne Plourde of Olivet had the top first-day score with a round of 78. Second day action continues on Saturday morning.

ADRIAN – The Calvin women’s golf team had a strong afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian Saturday at the Lenawee Country Club, posting a second place team score of 348 strokes. Calvin remains in fourth place in the overall standings with 36 holes left in the MIAA fall season but sits just five strokes out of third place and just seven strokes out of second place.Saint Mary’s took first place team honors with a score of 345 with Hope third at 350 and Olivet fourth at 355. Olivet remains in control of first place in the league standings by a healthy margin. Calvin junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin on Saturday with a round of 81 to finish in second place individually.

HOLLAND - The Calvin women’s golf team took second place at the two-day Calvin/Hope Division III Challenge, firing a Saturday round of 340 to finish with a two-day total of 688 strokes. Hope recorded a team score of 317 on Saturday to finish with a two day of of 652 strokes.Friday’s initial 18-hole round was hosted by Calvin at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club while Hope hosted Saturday’s 18-hole round at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club. Calvin junior Carlia Canto had a 75 on Saturday to take first place in the final tournament standings as she carded a round of 80 on Friday. Senior Elise Doezema picked up the pace on Saturday with a round of 83 after shooting 91 on Friday.

ADA - The first 18-hole round of the 36-hole Calvin-Hope Challenge is in the books and the visiting Flying Dutch of Hope have jumped out to a quick lead, recording a team score of 335 Friday afternoon at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. Calvin carded a team score of 348.The top individual finisher on Friday was Calvin junior Carlia Canto with a round of 80.In addition to Canto’s score, Calvin picked up an 85 from freshman Sarah Arendsen while senior Elise Doezema had a 91, freshman Jennie Poole a 92 and freshman Casey Harkema a 94.

SOUTH BEND, IN – The Calvin women’s golf team took fourth at the third MIAA Jamboree of the year on Wednesday, posting a team score of 342 strokes. Calvin is currently in fourth place in the overall MIAA standings, just two strokes behind Saint Mary’s. Calvin’s top golfer on Wednesday was junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) with a round of 83 that was good for fourth place individually. Freshman Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had an 85, senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 86, freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) and 88 and senior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) a 101.

ALMA - The Calvin women’s golf season just keeps getting better and better. On Saturday, the Knights posted a school record score of 335 strokes in taking second place at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club. On Thursday, Calvin posted a school record score of 338 strokes in taking third at a league tournament. Saturday’s score was not only good for second place but also moved Calvin within one stroke of second place in the overall league standings. Junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led Calvin on Saturday with a round of 80 that was good for third place individually. She was followed closely by senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who carded a round of 83 that was good for a tie for sixth place Saturday. Freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with a collegiate-best score of 84.

MARSHALL - The Calvin women’s golf team opened its 2012 MIAA fall campaign in strong fashion on Thursday afternoon, posting a third place score of 338 strokes at the first MIAA Jamboree of the year. The league tournament was hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Calvin tied for third place with Saint Mary’s (IN) and finished just two strokes back of second place Hope.Calvin was paced by senior Elise Doezema who carded a round of 79 that was good for second place individually in Thursday’s tournament. Junior Carlia Canto also had a fine afternoon with an 83 that left her in a tie for sixth place individually. Close behind were freshmen Jennie Poole and Casey Harkema with rounds of 87 and 89 respectively. Senior Rachel Whitaker rounded out Calvin’s finishers on Thursday with a 97.Calvin’s score is the lowest in school history at an MIAA competition.
Women’s Golf Team Captures North Central College Cardinal Classic Title

NAPERVILLE, IL – The Calvin women’s golf team came up with a banner day Tuesday afternoon, winning the North Central College Cardinal Classic. Competing in a field of 11 teams, Calvin came up with a team score of 349 strokes to edge Olivet Nazarene University and Carthage College by three strokes with host North Central in fourth with 353 strokes. Junior Carlia Canto led Calvin with a sizzling round of 82 that was good for third place individually. Senior Elise Doezema was close behind with an 85 that was good for a tie for sixth place individually. Rounding out Calvin’s scorers were freshman Casey Harkema with a 90, freshman Jennie Poole with a 92, senior Rachel Whitaker with a 97 and freshman Sarah Arendsen with a 100. Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA campaign on Thursday when it competes at a league outing hosted by Olivet at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.
