Calvin Men’s Cross Country Team Receives USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named its 2014 All-Academic team and individual recipients in men’s cross country and the Calvin men’s cross country team has received accolades on both counts. Led by head coach Brian Diemer, the Calvin men’s team posted a team cumulative grade point average this past fall of 3.38. In order to receive the award, teams must post a minimum team GPA of 3.10. Individually, Calvin had five members of its men’s team receive honors. Those five individuals include seniors Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS), juniors Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) and Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS). Individuals needed to have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA III Regional Championships.

Calvin in Fourth Place in Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Fall Sports Standings

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in fourth place with 269 points. Williams (Mass) leads the standings with 376 points with Middlebury (Vt.) second with 310 points and Trinity (Tx.) third with 281 points. Calvin picked up 100 points from its women’s volleyball team that captured the national championship last month in Holland, Michigan. Calvin also received 72 points from its women’s cross country team that placed seventh at the NCAA III Championships, 50 points from its women’s soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament and 47 points from its men’s cross country team that finished 27th at the NCAA III Championships.

MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Calvin Men’s Cross Country 27th at NCAA III Championships

HANOVER, IN - The Calvin men’s cross country team took 27th on Saturday at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships, posting a team score of 589 points.  Junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was Calvin’s top finisher, placing 128th in a time of 26:06. Freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) was close behind in 136th in a time of 26:10. Senior Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS) was 161st (26:19) and sophomore Jeff Meitler (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) in 171st (26:24). Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 186th (26:28), senior Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) in 220th (26:43) and senior Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 246th (27:08). St. Olaf won the men’s team title, upsetting top-ranked North Central with a first place score of 84 points with North Central second with 86. Wisconsin-LaCrosse was third (155) and Washington University of St. Louis fourth (167).

Calvin Men’s Cross Country Ranked 19th - Six Knights Receive Great Lakes All-Region Honors

The Calvin men’s cross country will head into the NCAA III Championships ranked 19th nationally. The Knights received the ranking earlier today when the USTFCCCA released its pre-nationals Top 35 poll. The ranking is a drop of one spot for the Calvin men’s cross country which entered last week ranked 18th. At the Great Lakes Regional meet last Saturday, Calvin took second with 79 points to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA III Championships this Saturday in Hanover, Indiana. Calvin will be making its 29th trip to the NCAA III Championships which ranks third on the all-time NCAA III men’s cross country list. In addition, six members of the Calvin men’s cross country team have received Great Lakes All-Region honors for finishing in the top-35 individually at Saturday’s regional competition. Those six individuals are junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS), freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS), senior Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS), sophomore Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS), senior Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS)  and junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS).

Calvin Men’s Cross Country Takes Second at Great Lakes Regional - Advances to NCAA III Championships

NCAA III Men's Cross Country Great Lakes Regional Results

KENTWOOD, Mich.  - The Calvin men’s cross country claimed an automatic trip to the NCAA III Championships next Saturday by placing second at the Great Lakes Regional meet with 79 points. Wabash College took first place with 60 points to end Calvin’s streak of 17 consecutive Great Lakes Regional titles. The top two teams at the regional meet earn automatic trips to the NCAA III Championships. Calvin will be making its 29th trip to the NCAA III Championships which ranks third on the all-time NCAA III men’s cross country list. Calvin had six runners finish in the top-23 on Saturday as junior Josh Ferguson was the first to cross the line for Calvin, taking 13th in 25:36.9. Freshman Zac Nowicki followed closely behind, taking 14th overall in 25:37.0. Senior Philip Spitzer and sophomore Jeff Meitler then crossed in 16th and 17th in times of 25:39.1 and 25:40.6, respectively. Senior Sam Kerk rounded out the top five finishers for the Knights, taking 19th in 25:42.5. Junior Steven Haagsma, Calvin’s sixth finisher, placed 23rd in a time of 25:55.0. Freshman Nathan Van Haitsma rounded out Calvin’s finishers, placing 47th in 26:18. Calvin’s top six finishers all earned Great Lakes All-Region honors by finishing in the top 35.

Four Calvin fall sports teams will be in action this weekend. The Calvin women’s volleyball team will host an eight-team Great Lakes Regional Thursday, Friday and Saturday while the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country programs will host the Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday at the Gainey Athletic Complex. In addition, the women’s soccer team will compete at a four-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Washington University of St. Louis. Calvin Men’s Cross Country Claims 27th Straight MIAA Title

WEST OLIVE - The championship streak continues for the Calvin men’s cross country program. For the 27th consecutive year, the Calivn men’s cross country team has captured the outright MIAA title. The championship streak is the MIAA’s longest string of outright conference championships. Ranked 16th nationally, Calvin claimed the outright crown by taking first place at Saturday’s MIAA Championships hosted by Hope at the West Ottawa Golf Course with a first place team score of 28 points. Hope took second with 59 points, edging Albion (61 points) by a two-point margin.The Knights placed seven runners in the top 11 including three in the top five. Junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was Calvin’s top finisher, placing third in a time of 25:42 while freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) was fourth in 25:45 and senior Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS) fifth in 25:46. Sophomore Jeff Meitler (New Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was seventh in 25:57 followed by freshman Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) in ninth (26:00), senior Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) in 10th (26:03) and junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 11th (26:03).

Calvin Cross Country Runners Receive MIAA Runner of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Zac Nowicki and Cassie Vince as its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through Oct. 20.Nowicki, a freshman from Comstock Park (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), helped lead Calvin to a seventh-place finish in a strong field of nationally-ranked teams at the Brooks Invitational meet hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He finished 30th in a time of 25:18 over the 8-kilometer course. Nowicki is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time this season. Vince, a freshman from Amherst, Ohio (Amherst HS), finished fifth as the Knights successfully defended their championship at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational. She ran a 21:39 over the 6-kilometer course as Calvin won the meet by 49 points over the University of Chicago, which was ranked higher in the recent Division III national poll. Vince is being honored as Runner of the Week for the first time this season.
