Final Director's Cup Standings
For the 18th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, finishing 15th in the nation in Division III in 2012-13 with a total of 651.0 points. Calvin is one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams won the title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning with a score of 1,273.75 points. The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Learfield Sports to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events.

Four short years ago, a freshman named Dave Sarkipato came to Calvin with the hopes of being the star on Calvin’s golf team. Fast-forward to the present day. Sarkipato, now a senior, still strives to be the best golfer he can be, but the team’s goals come before his own. Sarkipato played mainly tennis growing up. It wasn’t until high school that he picked up golf.

DESTIN, FL - The Calvin men’s golf team saw its season come to a close on the second day of competition at the NCAA III Championships as the Knights fired a score of 321 Wednesday afternoon. The 321 score was a repeat of a Tuesday’s performance that also saw the Knights shoot 321. The two-day total of 642 strokes leaves Calvin in 30th place in a field of 41 teams. The top 15 teams through Wednesday advance to Thursday and Friday. Calvin’s top finisher was senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had back-to-back rounds of 77 for a two-day total of 154. Sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had a solid second day, firing a round of 77 to go with a first day round of 81 for a two-day total of 158. Senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was next with an 81 after shooting 82 on Tuesday (163 total) while junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had an 81-86 (167) and junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 87-86 (163).

DESTIN, FL - The Calvin men’s golf team had an up-and-down day on the first day of competition at the NCAA III Championships held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. As a team, Calvin carded a score of 321 that leaves the Knights in 27th place heading into Wednesday’s competition. Calvin will need to move up to 15th place in order to make the cut for the final two rounds scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Guilford College is in 15th place with a team score of 307 strokes. Starting on the back nine of the links portion of the golf resort, Calvin struggled through its first nine holes but picked up momentum through its final nine holes of play. Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led Calvin with a round of 77 while sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens H) and junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had rounds of 81 while senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had an 82 and junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 87. Host Methodist leads with a team score of 290. Jeff Wells of Methodist had the top first day score with a round of 69. Calvin is scheduled to tee off on Wednesday morning at 8:20 a.m. on the Raven Course of the complex and will be joined by golfers from St. John Fisher and Rutgers-Camden. Calvin is making its second appearance in the last three years at the NCAA III Championships. In 2011, Calvin finished 26th at the national finals.

DESTIN, FL - The Calvin men’s golf team will make it second appearance in the NCAA III Tournament this week. Led by head coach Brian Bolt, the Knights will begin play on Tuesday afternoon at 12:50 p.m. Competing for the Calvin men’s golf team will be seniors Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), juniors Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS). Competition will take place at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida. Methodist University (NC) will serve as host. Calvin will open play on Tuesday afternoon and will be joined by teams from St. John Fisher and Rutgers-Camden. On Wednesday, Calvin will tee off with the same three teams beginning at 8:20 a.m.

Calvin College Wins MIAA Commissioner’s Cup!!!

For the first time since the 1999-2000 academic year, Calvin College has won the outright MIAA Commissioner’s Cup. Calvin finished the year with 216 points, finishing ahead of rival Hope which earned 205 points. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 year, Calvin and Hope shared the Commissioner’s Cup as the two schools tied for first place. Hope had since won the last four outright titles. The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 20 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner’s Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s standings in eight of 10 sports for men and eight of 10 sports for women. The Commissioner’s Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 and Alma 5. In addition, Calvin took first place in the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 102 points, finishing ahead of Hope which tallied 93. Calvin also took first place in the MIAA Women’s All-Sports standings with 114 points, edging Hope by two points. The 2012-13 academic year was an historic one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured an MIAA record 12 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.
Men’s golf wins MIAA NCAA Spring Qualifier - earns trip to nationals

CASCADE, MI - The Calvin men’s golf team captured the MIAA NCAA Spring Qualifier Sat. afternoon. The tournament consisted of three rounds, two of which were played at Watermark Country Club. The Knights finished with a three round score of 956, five strokes better than second place finisher Adrian. Coming into the final round, Calvin had an eight-stroke lead on second place Trine. The Knights shot a team score of 323 on the afternoon, good for third place. Calvin struggled as a team for most of the day, but did just enough to gain the MIAA’s automatic qualification into the national tournament. Despite the tough conditions, senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) shot the low round of the day (76) and was named the medalist of the round. Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens) finished in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 79 apiece. Calvin earns its second trip to the national tournament in the last three seasons. The Knights will play for a national championship in Destin, Fla., from May 17-21.
Men’s Golf Will Take Eight-Stroke Lead Into Final MIAA Spring Qualifier Round Saturday

CASCADE - Despite struggling with the elements, the Calvin men’s golf team increased its overall lead in the MIAA spring standings Friday afternoon at the Watermark Country Club. Calvin entered Friday with a seven-stroke lead for first place and concluded the day with an eight-stroke lead despite taking second place in Friday’s NCAA III Spring qualifying tournament with a team score of 329. Calvin entered with a seven-stroke lead over Hope but now holds an eight-stroke lead over Trine which moved into first place in the overall spring standings with a first place score of 323 on Friday. Calvin will host the final spring qualifier on Saturday with opening tee times set for 10:30 a.m. at the Watermark Country Club. The team that holds first place in the final overall spring standings which includes three 18-hole MIAA spring qualifier tournaments will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament next month.

CALEDONIA, MI - The Calvin men’s golf team competed in a nine team, one round tournament at Thornapple Pointe Golf Course. The Knights, who won the program’s second MIAA conference championship in history in the fall, finished in fourth place. Davenport won the invitational with a team score of 318. Calvin finished with a score of 331. Junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran) finished second individually with a round of 78 - 39 on the front nine followed by the same score on the final nine holes. Freshman Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) turned in a round of 81 (38-43) while juniors Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian) both shot rounds of 86. Freshman Ben Elenbaas (Byron Center/South Christian) shot 45 on both nines, and finished with a round of 90. Calvin returns to action Fri., Apr. 19, when it hosts the second of three MIAA Spring Tournaments at Watermark Country Club. The tournament is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
