Men’s Basketball Defeats Adrian 56-50 in MIAA Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – The Calvin College men’s basketball team hosted #7 Adrian College in the MIAA conference opener for both teams. The Knights defeated the Bulldogs 56-50 in a defensive battle at Van Noord Arena. Powell and Kruis led the way for Calvin with 14 points. Snikkers scored 12 points and hauled in eight rebounds. Lewis led the way for Adrian in defeat with 17 points. Calvin out-rebounded Adrian 39-31 in the contest. The Knights shot 87 percent from the charity strip (13-15). Adrian (11-1) will travel to DeVos Fieldhouse to face Hope on Saturday, Jan. 5. Calvin (10-2) will travel to Kresge Gymnasium to face the Britons of Albion College.
Jordan Brink Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin guard Jordan Brink its Player of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through December 30. Brink, a sophomore from Dyer, Ind. (Illiana Christian HS), averaged 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds as the Knights won the Elmhurst, Ill. Bluejay Classic. He fired in a career-high 27 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from 3-point range, and grabbed seven boards in just 23 minutes of action as Calvin routed Ripon, Wis., 87-62, in the championship game. He scored 22 of his points, including six 3-pointers, in the first half. Brink, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, shot 59 percent from the field (13 of 22) and 75 percent from 3-point range (9 of 12) for the tournament. Brink was named to the all-tournament team at the Elmhurst Blue Jay Classic. Earlier this year, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Tournament Thanksgiving weekend. Calvin returns to action on Thursday in a key MIAA opener as the Knights (9-2) host an Adrian College team that is 11-0 and ranked 12th nationally. Thursday’s game at Van Noord Arena is slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
Men’s Basketball Claims Elmhurst Bluejay Classic Title with 87-62 Win Over Ripon College

ELMHURST, ILL. – The Calvin men’s basketball team captured the Elmhurst Bluejay Classic championship with a 87-62 win over Ripon College, Wis. late Saturday afternoon. Senior Tom Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) were named to the all-tournament team. Brink and Snikkers led Calvin scoring 27 and 21 points respectively. Senior Matt De Boer (Hudsonville/Covenant Christian) scored 12 points in 15 minutes. Calvin shot a season-high 63.2 percent from beyond the arc in the contest. The Knights’ defense held Ripon to a mere 29.7 percent shooting from the field. Ripon senior forward Taylor Koth (Cedarburg, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led the Red Hawks with 18 points in defeat. Calvin finishes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 9-2 record. The Knights open up MIAA play with a game against the undefeated and nationally ranked Adrian Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 3 at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. The game is slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

ELMHURST, ILL. – The Calvin College men’s basketball team traveled to the west suburbs of Chicago Friday morning for the Bluejay Classic hosted by Elmhurst College. In December of 2010, Calvin split a pair of games at the same tournament. This time around, the Knights were determined not to fall in the first game. Calvin defeated Wabash College, Ind. 83-56. Kruis led the Knights with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) chipped in 12 points. Four Knights finished with eight points. Calvin will move on to the Bluejay Classic final against Ripon College, Wis. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. EST start on Saturday.
Men’s Basketball Defeats Finlandia 103-62

HANCOCK, Mich. – The Calvin College men’s basketball team made the nine-hour drive to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to face the Lions in an in-region contest Saturday afternoon. The Knights were victorious, defeating Finlandia 103-62 to improve to 7-2 on the season. Snikkers finished with a season-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. This moves Snikkers to 13th on Calvin’s all-time scoring list with 1,150 points. Kruis finished with 20 points. Sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) added 10 points. Finlandia was led in defeat by junior Dominic Morrow (Taylor, Mich.) and freshman Dylan Schroeder (Brimley, Mich.) with 13 and 12 points respectively. Calvin will return to action December 28 and 29 when it travels to Elmhusrt, Ill. The Knights will face Wabash in the first round and then face either Elmhurst or Ripon on day two of the tournament.

Men’s Basketball Falls to Carthage 74-63 in CCIW/MIAA Classic

WHEATON, IL – The Calvin College men’s basketball team faced off against Carthage College (WI)in the second day of the CCIW/MIAA Challenge. Calvin fell to Carthage 74-63 at Wheaton’s King Arena. Calvin drops to 6-2 on the season. Kruis led the Knights with 18 points and nine rebounds. Brink had 13 points. Dykstra and senior forward Tom Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) had seven points each. The Knights shot 40.7 percent from the floor, but connected on just five of 17 triples. Calvin will travel to the Upper Peninsula on December 8 to face Finlandia for an in-region game. Finlandia is coached by former Alma head coach Terry Smith.
Men’s Basketball Suffers First Defeat of Year in Loss at Wheaton

WHEATON, IL - In a matchup of unbeaten teams, Wheaton claimed a 54-37 victory over Calvin Friday night at the CCIW/MIAA Challenge. Calvin falls to 6-1 overall while Wheaton climbs to 5-0. Calvin’s 37-point total was its lowest since a 45-36 loss to Olivet in 1982.Calvin was led in defeat by senior Tom Snikkers who scored 11 points to move past Dan Davis and into 14th place on the Calvin career scoring list. Sophomore Jordan Brink added 10 points for the Knights. Wheaton was led in the win by Tyler Peters with 13 points. Calvin will face Carthage on Saturday at 2 p.m. (EST).

MANCHESTER, IN – The Calvin College men’s basketball team traveled to Manchester to take on the Spartans of Manchester University Tuesday night in a Great Lakes regional contest. Calvin defeated Manchester 87-63 to improve to 6-0 on the season. Four Knights scored in double figures. Senior guard Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) led Calvin with 13 points. Snikkers fell one rebound short of a double-double ending the game with 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomores Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) and Dykstra had ten points apiece. Sophomore Dan Stout (Escondido, CA/Calvin Christian) chipped in a career-high nine points off the bench. Calvin shot 47.1 percent from the field in the contest, including 8 of 21 behind the three point arc. The Spartans shot 38.3 percent and were led by Flores and sophomore guard Silas Sims (Hope, IN/Hauser) who scored 18 and 17 points respectively. Calvin is now 6-0 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. The Knights will travel to Wheaton, Ill. this weekend for the annual CCIW-MIAA Classic. Calvin will face host Wheaton on Friday at 8:00 p.m. CST and Carthage (WI) at 1:00 p.m. CST on Saturday.

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin College men’s basketball team faced nationally-ranked Cornerstone University Saturday night in the final day of the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic. Calvin defeated Cornerstone 70-65 to win the classic for the first time since 2010. Calvin took a 39-33 lead into halftime. Senior Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) sparked the Knights coming off the bench with 13 points hitting five of seven first half field goals. Senior David Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) had eight points and four assists. Sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian), who was named tournament MVP, led the Knights with 14 points including a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line. Senior Tom Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian), who joined Brink on the all-tournament team, chipped in 13 points. Powell had 13 points including three of four beyond the three-point arc. Mason and Hudson led the Golden Eagles with 20 and 16 points respectively in defeat. Calvin, now 5-0 for the first time since the 2000-01 season, will travel to Manchester College Tuesday, November 27, for an in-region game with the Spartans.
Calvin men’s basketball defeats Aquinas 58-55 in Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s basketball team opened play in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament with a 58-55 victory over Aquinas College at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin is now 4-0 on the season. Aquinas had won seven of its eight prior meetings with Calvin but the Knights were able to gain a lead late in the first half and hold on the rest of the way. Junior Tyler Kruis had 13 points to lead the Knights while sophomore Jordan Brink had 11 points and sophomore Tom Snikkers 10 points. Calvin shot 41.4 percent from the floor in each half. Calvin will face Cornerstone at 6 p.m. on Saturday on the second day of the tournament. Calvin is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
