The OC

The OC is one of my favorite television shows and one of the most popular shows among people my age.  It is intriguing because of the various types of relationships and the tensions that always seem to occur.  The OC portrays families living in Orange County, California.  Orange County is a very rich city where people live in mansions, drive fancy cars and spend vacations on tiny islands in the Pacific.  Within this wealthy lifestyle there are these two questions that arise: are people punished or rewarded for wrongdoings and does God have a role in their lives?”

Most people are wealthy because of their family or because they have worked hard to meet their goals in relationship to a career.  Most of the characters in the show do have successful businesses, but along with business there is always the temptation to do some business “under- the-desk” hidden from everyone.  These “under-the-desk” business practices have been practiced on the show between characters.  As a result, they are rewarded for their wrongdoings.  The characters were physically rewarded with money, but ultimately they were rewarded with the guilty conscience that comes with being involved in a shady business practice.  On the other hand, characters have been caught involved with a shady business and were punished by going to jail and receiving a high fine.
It is hard for one to concentrate their life on God when all that they are concerned with is their wealth, friends, clothes and vacations.  Most of the characters are blinded by their own selfishness and do not make time to go to church, pray or to even act like a Christian.  Sin has reeked havoc on most of the characters in the show; some have recovered but there is still no clear evidence of a God figure in their lives.  They believe that everything that they own is because of their own doing and that it was not a gift from God.
The OC is a prime example of what wealth can do to one’s life.  It may be amusing to watch with a group of friends but in reality it would not be the most fun to portray in real life.  Hopefully, even though unlikely, some of the characters in the show will turn back on their old ways and realize the sins that they have committed.  Until then, I will enjoy my popcorn with the girls.
