The Bahamas

The Bahamas, Harbour Island is a place that I remember well. I lived there for five years. When I think of the Bahamas, one of the ideas that run through my head is, the faithfulness of the Lord to my family in his keeping a hedge of protection around our lives.

The best example for me was in the second summer. I became very ill. My parents had no idea what was happening and I did not either. It started on Sunday, which I remember because we attended a three hour long church service (which was fairly normal in the Bahamas). I felt strange aching in my lower back had blood in my urine and soon developed a fever. We went to the doctor on HI and he said it was an infection of the gull bladder (later on in the states I underwent several batteries of tests and they said it was a double kidney infection which is unheard of in men and most common in pregnant women).  Most of this time for me is just a blur of hazy memories, of just waking and eating and sleeping with no household jobs and all the pop I could drink (to induce me to drink more fluids). I also remember having to wake up and drink water. When I was up for an hour or more I had to drink at least two 16 or 20oz. cups of water an hour to hydrate my, flush my system, and keep my 102 degree temperature from rising. I was even given alcohol baths by my parents to try to lower my fever but it only helped temporally. Finally the doctor found the last antibiotic I.V. of any kind on the island(medicine can be very scarce in the Bahamas) and put me on it. I soon got much better.
I had been sick for over two weeks and had my sister Rachel in the states worried sick (she is a doctor). After this incident Rachel gave us a supply of heavy duty antibiotics. Through it all the Lord was with me and protected my life.
