Catching Wisdom
The quote from Calvin Seerveld: “You cannot teach wisdom, I believe, but wisdom is contagious; you can catch it.” It means that at college you cannot take a class in Wisdom 101W, but if you take enough classes then you will learn wisdom because of being around smart people and experiences. We should be able to “catch” wisdom from all areas in our lives. We can learn it from going to classes, going to church, and reading the Bible. Something that you may or may not have realized is that you cannot catch a cold sitting by a fire alone by yourself. To catch a cold you have to first go out into the cold or catch it from another person.
Likewise, to catch wisdom you can not stay in your house watching TV. You have to go out and get experiences as well as learn from others. When you go to Church, you have to shake hands with lots of people; at this time you are at high risk of catching a cold. Also, when you are at church, you worship and learn with others this is a good time to catch wisdom, again you are not by your self. In my last example of reading the Bible, you are also not by yourself; you have the Holy Spirit to help you to read and intemperate the scripture. Even sometimes when we feel alone, if we are Christians we can never truly be alone. So yes, I do agree with his statement and believe that you can not catch wisdom, spiritual or otherwise, by yourself.
