About This Site
Dear Calvin Writer,
Welcome to Calvin Writers Recommend!
This is a resource just for you—Calvin student and writer. On this site, you will find a variety of resources to help you along in the publication process. What you will see is the result of nine weeks of work on a McGregor summer research fellowship, which I conducted with Professor Debra Rienstra in the English department. McGregor funding made it possible for Calvin Writers Recommend to be a full-time project, complete with Calvin IT aid, and it has been a wonderful experience.
There is a small selection of helpful articles under “The Basics.” Several dozen publication venues are featured under “Publications,” with the option of browsing alphabetically or conducting an advanced search. There are publications that could be a great place to submit work as well as publications that would just be good to read. You can also comment on and rate publications. A handful of workshop and contest listings are included, as well as a collection of useful links. The “Forum” section is a place for you to interact online with your fellow Calvin writers—start a thread, add to a conversation, just stop by to say hello.
So far, this has been a very personal project, subjective and colored by personal preference. I, your fellow student writer, readily admit to favoring certain publications. I looked for publications with strong connections to Calvin, publications with content that resonated with me, publications with religious ties. I also like publications that are aesthetically pleasing, publications that seem to demonstrate a sense of humor, publications that are digitally competent, with up-to-date easy-to navigate, attractive websites and unique web content, and these preferences played a role in which publications I chose to feature. There are publications on CWR that don’t seem to fit these criteria, but they give a general idea.
Calvin Writers Recommend is an ongoing project. My hope is for it to grow over the coming months—and years. You can get started contributing to the project right away by reviewing publications or by visiting the Forum link.
