CSR Student Research Assistants

Congratulations Graduates!

The CSR congratulates five of our student workers who graduated from Calvin this year. Gwen Einfeld, Kirsten Anderson, Jeremy Chacko, Gerald Egede and Emily Oosterhouse were each at the CSR for over a year, and now they seek to employ themselves in various exciting fields:
• Gwen, an Engineering graduate, is pursuing a graduate degree in Engineering at the University of Purdue
• Emily, having completed Calvin’s Psychology, Pre-Law and Business programs, is going on to study Forensic Psychology at the University of Denver
• Gerald, an Accounting major, is pursuing a graduate degree in Business or Accounting in the United Kingdom
• Kirsten, graduating with a degree in English will be teaching English in Cairo, Egypt and may continue working in the field of social research in English.
• Jeremy, graduate of Calvin’s History and Political Science programs, will be working at the Yellow Stone National Park

During their time at the Center, the graduates handled projects ranging from data entry to survey design and administration. The CSR bids farewell to the graduates who will be sorely missed.

Gwen Einfeld’s team wins Calvin bizPlan 2007

Congratulations to Gwen Einfeld, CSR’s omni-competent senior Research Coordinator. Gwen’s team won the first annual bizPlan entrepreneurship competition at Calvin in late November. An engineering major, Gwen helped Team Volturna propose a design for an electronic device that would receive wireless multimedia from computers and display it on a television.

Gwen is an outstanding veteran member of CSR’s student team. She became our “Research Coordinator” in 2006 and has continued to shine as an internal technical expert. At present, she is doing database design and team training for data cleaning for the Kent County Congregations Study (KCCS). Way to go, Gwen!

Calvin team maps health care for low-income patients

In summer 2007, Dr. Fred De Jong and social work student Lauren Vander Plas (at left) completed a significant report for the Grand Rapids Healthy Communities Access Program (GRHCAP), a federal grant awarded to Cherry Street Health Services as the head of a regional consortium of health care organizations.

The report’s maps illustrate the depth and breadth of low-income coverage provided by Grand Rapids’ growing clinic network. For example, the green areas in the map detail below show that the low-income patient population living in central Grand Rapids is a substantial proportion of the estimated low-income population in those same areas.

Calvin Press Release about our KCCS student team

Our Calvin student team is wrapping up its summer work this week, and Calvin’s Media Relations folks have produced an excellent press release about KCCS, written primarily from the perspective of student team members.

The project is on schedule! As of this writing, CSR student Field Interviewers have completed 245 face-to-face interviews with Kent County religious leaders, as well as doing field research to winnow down an initial list of over 900 possible congregations to a current clean list of just over 760. Our four summer student research assistants have been a big help, too. Another 44 face-to-face interviews have been conducted by clergy liaisons, and 115 telephone interviews are complete, putting total response to date over 50%. Data collection will continue into the fall, with a smaller team of Calvin students cooperating with the clergy liaisons and telephone subcontractor.

Thanks to all our partners, and especially to the congregations themselves, for making KCCS work!
