After-hours at Calvin

After-hours at Calvin

In college there is no curfew. (!!!) So what does the average Calvin student do after hours? Here are a few things the students pictured above came up with:

1. DORM SERENADING

"A classic Calvin tradition. It's a normal occurrence to see Calvin men in suits with their guitars serenading the girls' dorms." -Erika

Watch as some Huizenga boys wow a girl's floor with a rendition of "Don't Stop Believing" and "I'm Yours." Wait for it...wait for it...wait for it...it's definitely worth it!

2. STUDY

Yup. It happens...a lot.

3. BREAKFAST EQUIV BREAK

Also known as "B-QUIV," this program lets you claim food for missed breakfasts on your meal plan at Johnny's. Basically, when the 10 o'clock hour rings, hordes of students descend on Johnny's for late-night Fruit Loops, bagels, donuts and more.

"A great study break—every night I meet my friends at Johnny's to grab a bagel and talk about our days." -Erika

4. $1 BUCK FRIDAYS

You'll never be bored on a Friday night. Carnivals, 80s roller-skating parties, movies, ice-skating, fireworks and more.

"Super fun and cheap! My favorites include the carnival on Common's lawn, cosmic bowling and ice-skating at Rosa Parks." -Erika

"All of Grand Rapids for 1 dollar. Rosa Parks Ice Skating is the certified best." -Seth

5. FAIR TRADE COFFEE AT THE FISH HOUSE

Calvin's on-campus coffeehouse is the best place to get superb coffee and hang out in a very chill atmosphere.

"Easily the best place on campus to get coffee and find some new great tunes. Not a bad place to do some studying as well!" -Seth

6. OBSERVATORY STAR GAZING

Open every Wednesday until midnight. Look at stars, asteroids and more through the ginormous telescope, or just stand on top of the Science Building and behold the glory with your naked eye.

"As an observatory assistant, I got to point out the Moon, planets and stars to star-struck couples...and other curious people of course." -Kirsten
"Be still and know that I am God." - Seth

7. FREE MOVIES AT THE CFAC

The Hunger Games, Inception, The Avengers...and that's just the beginning. Enjoy nearly-new releases in Calvin's CFAC auditorium for free, or almost free.

"I was skeptical about the quality of films in our Covenant Fine Arts Center, but when I watched Inception there, it was like being in any other movie theater except better: I got to experience the movie with a whole audience of Calvin students at the price of $1." -Kirsten

8. SLEDDING ON DINING HALL TRAYS

Don't let the lunch lady see you stealing the trays—or make your own sled like Miki did:

"Never has wiping out been so stylish or fun. We used flimsy pieces of cardboard and went down steep hills on them at high speed. Or at least tried to..." -Miki

9. THIRSTY THURSDAY SLURPEE RUNS

Seven Eleven, anyone?

10. CALVIN WALK

Exactly what it sounds like. Romance or no, Calvin's campus is even beautiful by night.

  • We'd like to introduce to some pretty cool people. They're doing some pretty great things, both at Calvin and beyond.

  • When you choose Calvin, you choose Grand Rapids, too. Thankfully, GR is the kind of place you won't mind spending four years, with more new restaurants, shops and events opening all the time!
