What does it mean to be a man?
- Scoring the winning shot like Kobe Bryant?
- Getting the hottest girls like James Bond?
- Making the money like Bill Gates?
- Drinking beer and watching tv like Homer Simpson?
Popular culture is full of messages about what it is to be a man in today’s world. What do you think about those messages and the pressures they create? If guys buy into these stereotypes are we setting ourselves up for success? Or disappointment? And what effect do male stereotypes have on the women in our lives?
Aaron Winkle and Prof. Christina Van Dyke will lead us in thinking about some of these important issues together. Aaron will tell his personal story, sharing his take on the myths of manhood that reign in the sports world. Professor Van Dyke will help us look at perceived male attitudes to food and sex. We'll also be having plenty of fun - an evening of tubing on the sledding hill at Pando, good food and a chance to hang out with friends old and new.
In addition to the retreat will be a follow up men's discussion group led by Aaron starting February 23 and continuing into March 2, 9 and 16. Lunch will be provided during the discussion in the faculty meeting room. If you'd like to sign up email Aaron at asw3@calvin.edu.
