Men’s Basketball Picked as Co-Favorite/Women’s Basketball Picked Second in MIAA Coaches’ Poll

The MIAA men’s and women’s basketball pre-season coaches’ polls have been announced. On the men’s side, Calvin has been picked as the MIAA co-favorite with Hope. Both teams received four first place votes and four second place votes, creating a tie with 10 points apiece. Olivet was picked to finish third.

On the women’s side, Calvin was picked to finish second behind defending champion Hope. Hope received six first place votes while Calvin received two. Saint Mary’s was picked to finish third.

The Calvin women’s basketball team will seek to blend youth and experience this upcoming season as the Knights will feature a handful of savvy veterans and an abundance of talented players among their freshmen and sophomore classes.

Veteran leadership will come from seniors Brook Van Eck (Lowell/Lowell HS) , Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS),  and Amber Benthem (McBain/McBain Christian HS) along with juniors Leah Morrison (Chelsea/Chelsea HS) and Kacy Cryderman (Dimondale/Holt HS).

The Calvin men’s and women’s basketball teams are both ranked nationally in the preseason issues of DIII News and WDIII News respectively.

In the DIII News preseason top 25 poll, Calvin is ranked 18th. Defending national champion Washington University of St. Louis is the preseason number-one ranked team. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the preseason top 25 poll as Hope is ranked 11th.

Meanwhile, the Calvin women’s basketball team is ranked 20th in the WDIII News preseason top 25 poll. Washington University of St. Louis - last year’s national runner-up - is the preseason number-one ranked team. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the preseason WDIII News poll as defending MIAA champion Hope is ranked third.
