Two members of the Calvin women’s basketball team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are junior Breanna Verkaik while junior teammate Kayla Engelhard has been named to the All-MIAA second team. This year, Breanna Verkaik finished third in the MIAA scoring race, averaging 16.3 points a game in league play. She closed the year with a nine-game double-figure scoring streak, averaging 19 points a game during that stretch. She also led the league in field goal percentage (.549) and was second in free throw percentage (.836) and three-point field goal percentage (.424) and was third in blocked shots per-game (1.19). She was named MIAA Player of the Week once during the year. Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) averaged 12.2 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per-game while connecting on 37 percent of her three-point field goal attempts in league play. Engelhard was ranked third in the MIAA in steals, tied for fourth in assists, sixth in three-point field goal percentage and 11th in scoring average. In the MIAA Tournament, she averaged 17.5 points a game.Sunday, March 02, 2014

Coming off an upset of nationally ranked Olivet in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, the Calvin women’s basketball team was looking for a repeat performance against the Flying Dutch of rival Hope College in the Tournament Final on Saturday night. The Knights faced a tall-task in Hope, ranked #1 in the nation and entering with a perfect 26-0 record. Calvin trailed by 16 at half and by 20 with just over ten minutes to go, and a Knights rally in the second half drew Calvin within four at 81-77, but the Knights would come no closer as Hope closed out an 88-79 win. Junior Kayla Engelhard led Calvin with 19 points while junior Breanna Verkaik added 18 points and six rebounds. Junior Hannah Acre had 12 points while freshman Anna Timmer chipped in 11. The loss is the final game in the collegiate career of lone senior Kirstin Tripp, who goes down as one of the winningest players in Knights history at 95-19 for her career. The Calvin women’s basketball team traveled to Olivet on Thursday night for an MIAA Tournament semifinal contest. The Knights faced a win-or-go-home scenario against the Comets, an opponent that swept the regular season series from Calvin by scores of 77-73 and 82-67. Despite twice falling to Olivet, it was the Knights that came out on top when it mattered most, as 27 points and 14 rebounds from junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) paced Calvin en route to a hard-fought 80-76 victory. Senior Kayla Engelhard added 16 points while junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) and freshman Anna Timmer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) each scored 10. The win sends Calvin into the MIAA Tournament final on Saturday which will be hosted by Hope. Saturday’s final will be played at 7:30 p.m. at the DeVos Fieldhouse, following the 3 p.m. men’s tournament final, also between Calvin and Hope.
