ANGOLA, IN – The Calvin women’s basketball team stretched its win streak to three games with a 68-63 conference victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon. Calvin led 40-26 at halftime and continued to hold a double-digit lead with five-and-a-half minutes remaining but a series of missed free throws by the Knights allowed Trine (1-5 overall, 0-1 MIAA) to creep to within three points with 19 seconds remaining at 66-63. Junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) iced the game with a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining as the Knights held on for the win. Calvin (5-2 overall, 2-1 MIAA) received 19 points from junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) while junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and Acre had 16 points apiece. Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) added nine points and five rebounds. The Calvin women’s basketball team returned to conference play on Wednesday evening, hosting the Britons of Albion at Van Noord Arena. The game was the MIAA opener for the Britons, while Calvin came in with an 0-1 conference mark. Both teams entered the contest with 3-2 overall records. Calvin, after leading by two at halftime, opened up a 24 point margin in the second half and coasted to a 77-69 win. Junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) led the Knights with 15 points while junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had 14 points and eight assists. Junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) added a career high 14 points on 7-for-7 shooting while junior Abby VanderWoude (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had 10 points and six rebounds. MANCHESTER, IN - The Calvin women’s basketball team got back on the winning track with a 65-55 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night. The win lifts Calvin’s season record to 3-2. Calvin held a 39-31 halftime lead and used a 12-5 run over the final three minutes of regulation to seal the win. Calvin led throughout the second half with Manchester closing to within two points on one occasion and then with three points at 53-50 late in the contest before the Knights pulled away for the win. Junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led Calvin with 15 points including three baskets from beyond the three-point arc. Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) had 13 points while junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 11 points. Junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) added 10 points to round out a balanced Calvin scoring attack. Sophomore Abby Springer (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills HS) also chipped in with eight points including a pair of three-pointers.
