2005-2006 in Review

Under the leadership of 10th-year head coach Dan Gelderloos, the men’s swimming and diving team took third place in the final MIAA standings, achieving a pre-season team goal. In dual meet competition, Calvin posted an overall record of 4-8 but went 3-2 against league foes, defeating Alma, Albion and Kalamazoo.

At the conference meet held at the Jenison Aquatics Center, Calvin recorded a third place team score of 314 points, finishing 20 points ahead of fourth place Kalamazoo and 21 points ahead of fifth place Albion.

Although Calvin had no conference champions at the league meet, the Knights were not without several standout performances. Senior captain Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) was the anchor of the team, placing third in the 400 IM (4:14.02), fourth in the 200 IM (1:57.60) and fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:00.13). Sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) had a big three days of competition at the league meet, placing second in the 100 freestyle (47.04), third in the 100 butterfly (52.33) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (21.72). For his efforts, Boumgarden landed a spot on the All-MIAA team for the first time in his career.

Sophomore Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA) also had a strong conference meet, taking second in the 200 butterfly (1:59.14), eighth in the 400 IM (4:26.33) and 11th in the 200 IM (2:02.37).

Juniors Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Andrew Resseguie (Holland, Mich.) paced the Knights in the freestyle events with Tuuk taking second in the 200 freestyle (1:43.57), sixth in the 500 freestyle (4:48.22) and 10th in the 100 freestyle (48.21) while Resseguie was fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.68), seventh in the 100 freestyle (47.09) and 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:46.71). Freshman Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) also played a key role, taking fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:51.55), seventh in the 100 butterfly (53.02) and seventh in the 500 freestyle (4:49.70).

Calvin also had several strong efforts in the relay events. Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Jordan Resseguie (Holland, Mich.), Tuuk, Boumgarden and Bagnall took third place (1:25.65) while its 400 freestyle relay team of Boumgarden, Andrew Resseguie, Bagnall and Tuuk took second with a time of 3:09.53. Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay team of Boumgarden, Bagnall, Andrew Resseguie and Tuuk took second place with a time of 6:57.82.

In addition, freshman diver Jack Ryfiak (Belding, Mich.) swept up a number of points at the conference meet, placing third on the one-meter board (410.75) and fourth on the three-meter board (378.70).
