Men's
Basketball (2007-2008 Outlook)
The 2006-07 Calvin men’s basketball team finished the year with a flourish, winning nine of its final 11 games including five of its final six. Included in the run were a pair of February victories over rival Hope and a March win at nationally-ranked Aurora University in the first round of the NCAA III Tournament.
Can the Knights carry that late-season momentum into the upcoming 2007-08 campaign? Head coach Kevin Vande Streek would like to think so.
“We had a strong finish to the season,” Vande Streek said of his team from a year ago. “We graduated some key players from that team but we also have some key players back. I think one of the big positives for our team this year is that we have 10 returning varsity players and of the 14 players on our roster, 12 of them were in our program a year ago.”
Calvin went with a three-guard lineup over the second half of the 2006-07 season and all three guards return this year in senior Derek Griffin (Whitehall HS/Muskegon CC) and juniors Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD/Sioux Falls Christian HS) and Dustin Smith (Hamilton/Hamilton HS). Griffin and Veldhouse were both named to the All-MIAA first team with Veldhouse averaging 15.0 points and Griffin 14.8 points a game. Griffin is a 6-3 shooting guard with the ability to move into a wing forward spot when the three-guard lineup is employed. A 6-2 combo guard, Veldhouse has been named a pre-season All-American by DIII News after receiving honorable mention All-America honors from the publication last March. A 5-9 point guard, Smith averaged 7.4 points a game and averaged over 2.0 assists-per-game.
Despite the success of the group together, Vande Streek is unsure about using the three-guard lineup in his starting unit once again. “The positive about the three-guard look is that it puts our best players on the floor at the same time but the negative is that it makes us smaller and hurts our rebounding chances,” said Vande Streek. “We may stay with the three-guard lineup and we may not. The one thing I know for sure is that all three of the guards will receive a lot of playing time.”
The frontcourt is where Calvin has a few holes to fill as starting post players Eric DeVries and Josh Meckes have graduated as has key reserve Kyle Snoeyink. All three players provided strong defensive and rebounding skills. “I think our biggest challenge early on will be to replace the defense that Eric, Kyle and Josh provided,” said Vande Streek. “In our defensive system, our post defense is very important. We have some talented players ready to step into the starting lineup but it may take a little time to solidify our interior defense.”
Expect 6-8, 245 pound center John Mantel to fill one of the post slots. As a freshman, Mantel appeared in all 29 games and started nine, averaging 7.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. In a second round NCAA III Tournament loss to Hope, Mantel came off the bench to provide a team-high 16 points. Other frontcourt candidates include 6-6, 230 pound junior forward Tim Katt (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East HS), 6-6, 200 pound junior Tyler Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS), 6-6, 205 pound junior forward Mike Zwier (Wyoming/Tri-unity Christian HS), 6-10, 200 pound sophomore forward Brent Schuster (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) and 6-6, 195 pound sophomore forward Josh Engelsma (Walker/Covenant Christian HS).
Katt will serve as a team tri-captain along with Veldhouse and Griffin and might be one of the most improved players on the Calvin roster after averaging 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds a game as a sophomore. Zoerhof started in 10 games last year before settling into a back-up role down the final stretch. The athletic lefthander averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. Also a lefthander, Zwier saw action in 10 games, averaging a point per contest. Schuster and Engelsma spent the entire 2006-07 season on the Calvin junior varsity putting up big numbers. Schuster averaged 14.4 points and 5.6 rebounds a game on the Calvin jayvees while connecting on 50 percent of his three-point field goal attempts. Engelsma meanwhile averaged a double-double at clips of 20.3 points and 11.1 rebounds a game.
“We have some good candidates for our frontcourt,” said Vande Streek. “The deciding factor on what lineup we go with will not necessarily come down to who is the most talented but who fits best with the other players on the floor. I like the depth that we have in the post. It just may take a little time for it to develop.”
Calvin’s wing position will be bolstered by junior Todd Koetsier (Wyoming/Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Matt Veltema (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS). A 6-4, 215 pound forward, Koetsier has struggled with injuries throughout his Calvin career but finally appears to be injury free. “I think Todd is the healthiest he has been since he arrived at Calvin,” said Vande Streek. “I’ve been very enthused with his work ethic and the energy he brings to our team.” A left-handed sharp-shooter, Veltema averaged 6.3 points and 1.7 rebounds a game off the bench as a freshman, connecting on 30 three-point field goals. “Matt is a terrific shooter,” said Vande Streek. “When he gets going from the outside, he can be a real game-breaker.”
Adding depth in the backcourt will be junior Mischa McCray (Petoskey/Harbor Lights Christian HS) and freshmen Bryan VanHarn (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Jimmy Strunk (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS). A 6-2, 185 pound guard, McCray 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds a game as a sophomore. VanHarn and Strunk are both 6-1 guards with VanHarn more of a natural point guard and Strunk a shooting guard.
“Mischa has really improved over the summer and Bryan and Jimmy both bring something different to our team,” said Vande Streek. “Bryan is a very good decision-maker with the ball while Jimmy is very good at finding ways to score.”
Calvin will open the season nationally-ranked. The Knights are ranked 13th by DIII News and have been ranked in the top-20 by The Basketball Times.
“One of the things that I like about this team is that it has the ability to score,” said Vande Streek. “My better teams have all been able to score the basketball and this team has that kind of potential. I think the two things we will have to watch is our defense, particularly in the post and also finding a rotation that we are comfortable with. We have a lot of guys who can play. Now it’s up to the coaching staff to find the right fit.”

Calvin will open the year by hosting its own Calvin Tip-Off Tournament November 16 and 17. The Knights will face Grace Bible College in a first round game and then meet either Ohio Northern University or Washington University of Missouri. Washington will enter the season ranked number-one in the country as the Bears return four starters from a team that reached the 2007 NCAA III Final Four.
On Thanksgiving weekend, Calvin will again participate in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament with Cornerstone serving as host this year. Calvin will open the tournament on November 23 against the host Golden Eagles with Aquinas and Hope meeting in the other first round game.
Calvin will then host the CCIW/MIAA Classic November 30 and December 1, facing Carthage on November 30 and Wheaton (IL) on December 1. The Knights also have non-conference games scheduled with Aquinas (December 5) and Trinity Christian (December 15) before traveling to New Jersey for a Christmas tournament at Montclair State University. The tournament will include Keene State and Salem State with both teams earning trips to the NCAA III Tournament last year. Keene State will open the upcoming season ranked fifth in the DIII News pre-season Top-25 poll. While in New Jersey, Calvin will spend a pair of days seeing the sights of New York City City.
“Our non-conference schedule is very challenging but we are all very much looking forward to the challenge,” said Vande Streek. “We will face several different styles of play during the non-conference portion of our schedule. Some of the teams we play will be very deliberate and physical while others will look to run and push the ball. We’ll see both of those styles when start our conference season so our non-conference schedule will serve as good preparation for the MIAA season.”
Calvin will open its conference schedule on January 9 when it hosts Tri-State University in a rematch of last year’s MIAA Tournament semifinals. Calvin’s home game with rival Hope will take place on January 26 while its homecoming opponent will be Adrian on February 9. The MIAA Tournament is scheduled to open on February 27 with the MIAA Tournament semifinals set for February 29 and the MIAA Tournament finals slated for March 1.
“I think the MIAA will once again very competitive top-to-bottom,” said Vande Streek. “Always, our goal will be to play our best basketball of the year when the MIAA Tournament rolls around.”
Vande Streek also had special words of welcome to first-year MIAA coaches Terry Smith who takes over the helm of the Alma program and Gene Gifford who takes over at Olivet. “I know Terry and Gene very well and I want to welcome them to our league,” said Vande Streek. “I think both coaches will do an excellent job at their respective institutions and they will make our league that much stronger.”
Women's Basketball
(2007-2008 Information)
2007-08 Calvin Women’s Basketball Outlook
Despite returning three starters from a team that finished 28-3 overall and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament a year ago, the Calvin women’s basketball team will have a decidedly different look this year.
Gone are graduated All-America center Lisa Winkle as well as shot-blocking specialist Rachael Willett and starting guard Lindsey Peuler. The all-time leading scorer and rebounder in Calvin women’s basketball history, Winkle is now a high school math teacher. Willett and Peuler are focusing on their academic careers this year with Willett studying with a Calvin student group in Washington D.C. while Peuler is putting more hours into her duties as a Calvin student athletic trainer.
Nevertheless, the Knights do have several veterans with which to build their hopes upon this winter.
Calvin’s greatest depth will be in its backcourt as seniors Nikki Zimmerman (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) and Wendy Zigterman (Western Springs, IL/Timothy Christian HS) join juniors Kristi Brummel (Byron Center/South Christian HS), Sarah Partridge (East Lansing/East Lansing HS), Kelly Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford HS) and Marissa Walker (Cedar Springs/Cedar Springs HS) and sophomores Kelly Bennett (Williamston/Williamston HS) and Allison Griswold (Webberville/Lansing Christian HS).
A 5-7 point guard, Zimmerman averaged 5.8 points and 3.3 assists-per-game last year while connecting on 43 percent of her three-point field goal attempts. Zigterman appeared in 14 games last year and will add depth and leadership to the backcourt. Despite serving as Calvin’s first player off the bench last year, the 5-9 Brummel still earned a spot on the All-MIAA second team after averaging 8.0 points and 2.5 rebounds a game while connecting on 43.7 percent of her three-point field goal attempts. Brummel suffered a season-ending injury in the MIAA Tournament championship game but is working her way back to full health.
A 5-7 shooting guard, Trewhella returns for her third year in the Calvin starting lineup. A heady player, Trewhella averaged 4.1 points and 2.5 assists-per-game. She also displayed a knack for hitting the big shot in the clutch as she sank key shots in the closing moments of victories at Hope and at Wilmington last year.
A 5-7 guard, Partridge appeared in all 31 games for the Knights last year and received significant playing time in the NCAA III Tournament after Brummel’s injury. Partridge responded by averaging 5.2 points a game off the bench in four NCAA III Tournament games. Also a 5-7 guard, Walker saw more time in the NCAA III Tournament last year as well, hitting key three- pointers in victories over Thomas More and Southern Maine.
Griswold is a 5-4 combo guard while Bennett is a 5-3 point guard. Both players also saw time as freshmen. Griswold appeared in all 31 games and averaged 4.8 points a game, connecting on nearly 38 percent of her three-point field goal attempts. Griswold hit for double-digits in scoring three times last year including a career-high 17 points in a late January win over Rochester College.
“We have good depth in our backcourt and I like the shooting ability that our guards have,” said head coach John Ross who is 99-17 in four years as Calvin’s head coach. “That’s a good thing because I think the three-point shot will be a bigger part of our offense this year.”
Calvin’s frontcourt will be led by 6-1 forward junior Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who has been named a pre-season honorable mention All-American by Women’s DIII News. Like Brummel, Harris suffered a season-ending injury in the MIAA Tournament championship game last February and missed the four-game NCAA III Tournament run by the Knights. Prior to her injury, Harris was in the midst of a sensational sophomore campaign, averaging 15.8 points and 5.5 rebounds a game while connecting on better than 58 percent of her field goal attempts. Harris was later named to the All-MIAA first team for a second straight year and received Great Lakes All-Region honors from D3hoops.com. Like Brummel, Harris is working her way back to full health. Heading into the 2007-08 season, Harris is 187 points shy of reaching the 1,000 point plateau for her career.
Joining Harris up front will be 6-2 junior center Lauren Roodvoets and 5-9 sophomore forward Brook VanEck (Lowell/Lowell HS). Roodvoets appeared in five varsity games and averaged 1.6 rebounds a game while also seeing time on the Calvin junior varsity. VanEck had a strong freshman campaign last year, averaging 4.6 points and 2.6 rebounds a game off the bench. In the NCAA III Tournament, VanEck averaged 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds a game including a 14-point effort off the bench in a 60-56 Sweet 16 victory over Southern Maine.
Newcomers to the roster include sophomores Amber Benthem (McBain/Northern Michigan Christian HS), Allie Weima (Caledonia/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS). All three players were members of the Calvin junior varsity a year ago. Bethem and Weima are 5-9 forwards while Ottenhoff is a 5-5 combo guard.
The lone freshman on the varsity roster is 6-0 forward Kacy Cryderman (Dimondale/Holt HS) who provides height and depth on the frontline.

Calvin will open its season November 16 and 17 at a tournament hosted by the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. Calvin will also compete in the CCIW/MIAA Classic at Hope College, facing Wheaton and Carthage in the two-day tournament. In addition, the Knights will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, over Christmas break to compete in a tournament hosted by Great Lakes region power Baldwin-Wallace. Other non-conference opponents include Concordia (MI) and Rochester College (MI).
Calvin will open its MIAA campaign on November 27 at Kalamazoo College. The MIAA Tournament is scheduled to open on February 26 with the semifinals set for February 28 and the championship game set for March 1.
Men's Swimming and Diving
2007-08 Outlook
Calvin returns 13 letterwinners from a team that finished fourth in the final 2007 MIAA standings. Leading the list of returning letterwinners is senior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL/Naperville North HS) – a two-time All-MIAA selection. He is joined in the senior class by Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA/Rocklin HS), Peter Groenewald (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and Lucas Seebeck (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
A freestyle and butterfly specialist, Boumgarden posted three top-three finishes at the MIAA Championships last February including a league runner-up berth in the 100 freestyle. Gluvers is a backstroke specialist and also had top-six finishes in both the 100 and 200 backstroke at the conference meet. Groenewald will compete in the butterfly and freestyle events while Seebeck will serve as Calvin’s top breaststroke competitor.
The junior class is led by Matt Bolles (Holland/West Ottawa HS), Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South HS), Dennis Steenbergen (Aylmer, ON/London District Christian High School), Mark Volle (Colorado Springs, CO/The Classical Academy) and Evan Chong (Gotha, FL/Olympia HS).
Bolles scored in the relays and in the 100 breaststroke at the conference meet while Conrad had top six finishes in the 1,650 freestyle and in the 200 butterfly. Steenbergen will serve as one of Calvin’s two divers this year. He scored in both the one and three-meter events at the 2007 MIAA Champoinships. Volle also scored at the 2007 conference meet, placing 10th in the 400 IM and 11th in the 200 backstroke as well as in the relays. Chong rejoins the team after a year away from swimming.
The sophomore class consists of distance freestyler Josh Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled), freestyler Brad Groenewald (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Jon Herrema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Fox scored in the 400 IM and 1,650 freestyle at the 2007 MIAA Championships while Herrema scored in the 100 butterfly. VanAllsburg took sixth in the 100 backstroke at the conference meet and also scored as a member of Calvin’s 200 medley relay team.
The freshman class is made up of Stephen Kruse (Northville/Northville HS) and Tyler Westman (Naperville, IL/Naperville North HS). Kruse will join Steenbergen as one of Calvin’s two divers while Westman will compete in the backstroke and IM events.
“We are a little short on depth this year but we do have some quality swimmers and divers,” said 12th-year head coach Dan Gelderloos before the opening of the season. “We may not have the depth to place high at the conference meet as a team this year but we can still make an impact and our guys are determined to do so. We also have hope of qualifying a relay team or an individual or two for nationals. It is certainly a goal that we are capable of achieving.”
In addition to competing in dual meets against MIAA schools, Calvin will also compete in non-conference meets against Wayne State, Denison, Wheaton and Grand Valley State. The Knights will compete at the Eastern Michigan Invitational November 30 and December 1.
Calvin will spend a week of its Christmas break training in Coral Springs, FL (December 17-23). The MIAA Championships are slated to held at the Holland Aquatic Center February 14-16. The NCAA III Championships will take place March 20-22 on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Women's Swimming
and Diving 2007-08 Outlook
The three-time defending MIAA champion Calvin women’s swimming and diving team returns 21 letterwinners this year. Under the direction of 12th-year head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Knights are coming off the most successful season in school history. During the 2006-07 season, the Knights established a school record for dual meet victories (12), captured the MIAA title with a school record total of (675.5) points at the MIAA Championships and then posted its best-ever finish at the NCAA III Championships with a team score of 251 points.
Of the 21 returning letterwinners, eight were NCAA III All-Americans last year while four were All-MIAA selections.
Leading the list of returning letterwinners is junior diver Erica Deur (Holland/Holland Christian HS) who earned National Diver of the Year honors last March after winning the national title on the one-meter board and placing second on the three-meter board. The national record holder on the one-meter board, Deur is also the MIAA record holder on both the one and three-meter boards and is the two-time reigning MIAA Female Diver of the Year. Deur is part of a powerful Calvin diving contingent as sophomore Casey Herman (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville HS) returns after earning honorable mention All-America honors with a 14th place finish on the one-meter board at the 2007 NCAA III Championships. Also back in the fold for the Knights are senior Lis Beal (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Jeena Velzen (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA/Charlottsville). Beal was fifth on the one-meter board at the 2007 MIAA Championships and was fourth on the three-meter board. Velzen and Leach also posted top-10 finishes for the Knights on both diving boards at the conference meet.
“Our group of divers is one of our biggest strengths,” said Calvin women’s swim coach Dan Gelderloos before the year began. “They are not only very talented, but they also work very hard and encourage each other on. It’s a very healthy environment.”
The Calvin divers are led by second-year diving coach Aaron Paskvan who was named the 2007 Division III Women’s Diving Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the NCAA III Championships last March.
“Aaron has been a wonderful asset to our team,” said Gelderloos. “Our divers have greatly improved from his instruction and we are very blessed to have him on our coaching staff.”
Deur is one of four returning All-MIAA selections for Calvin this year along with senior sprinter Kat Vinson (Kanehohe, HI/Punahou HS), senior freestyler Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL/Adlai Stevenson HS) and sophomore breaststroker Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb HS). Vinson and Duncan are both three-time All-MIAA selections and both swimmers were part of All-America relay teams at the 2007 NCAA III Championships. Roberts is the Calvin record holder in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.52) and took third in the event at the 2007 national meet.
Other returning All-Americans include juniors Cara VanWoerkom (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS), Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH/Westerville North HS) and Jordan Scott (Oakville, ON/Kings Christian Collegiate HS) and sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA/Warren HS) with all four individuals members of All-America relay teams in 2007. VanWoerkom and Price are freestyle specialists while Wolfe focuses on the butterfly and Scott the backstroke.
Other returning letterwinners include senior breaststroker Sarah Abbott (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS), junior butterfly Monica Passeno (Saginaw/Saginaw Heritage HS), sophomore butterflyer Kelley Barr (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney HS), sophomore backstroker Alyssa Ludema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore butterfly specialist Danielle Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS), sophomore backstroker Jo VanderLinde (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore distance freestylers Libby Veldkamp (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and Gillian Wood (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS).
“The beauty of our returning letterwinners is that fact that every one of them scored at the conference meet last year,” said Gelderloos. “We have excellent depth and balance and our team members are very motivated to contribute.”
Also looking to contribute this year will be a class of nine first-year Calvin swimmers. The group includes junior transfer Allison Rober (Logansport, IN/Logansports HS), Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS). Carmen Brummel (West Olive/Holland Christian HS), Jean Buteyn (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie HS), Erin Chong (Gotha, FL/Olympia HS), Lindsay Huizenga (Rockford/Rockford HS). Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) and Brianna VandenEnde (Huntsville, ON/Huntsville HS).
“We have a strong recruiting class,” said Gelderloos. “Every individual in the group is capable of scoring points at our conference meet. It should make our depth that much stronger.”
In addition to competing in dual meets against every MIAA school, Calvin will also compete in non-conference meets against Wayne State, Denison, Wheaton and Grand Valley State. The Knights will compete at the Eastern Michigan Invitational November 30 and December 1.
Calvin will spend a week of its Christmas break training in Coral Springs, FL (December 17-23). The MIAA Championships are slated to held at the Holland Aquatic Center February 14-16. The NCAA III Championships will take place March 13-15 on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
“Our first goal again is to win the MIAA title,” said Gelderloos. “Our league is very competitive but we feel that we have the kind of team that can reach that goal. Our second goal is to qualify as many individuals as we can for the NCAA III Championships. It may be a little difficult to finish as high as we did last year but I still feel that we have the potential to make an impact at the national meet.”
2007 SEASON IN REVIEW
Led by Coach Dan Gelderloos, the women’s swimming and diving team earned its third consecutive MIAA title and its fifth overall. During the dual-meet portion of the schedule, Calvin established a school record for victories in a season, finishing 12-1 overall, including a 6-0 record against MIAA competition. Over the course of the season, Calvin broke nine school records.
At the MIAA swimming and diving championships held in mid-February at the Jenison Aquatic Center, Calvin racked up a first-place total of 675.5 points. The point total was the second-highest in MIAA women’s swimming and diving history, surpassed only by the 722 points produced by Hope in 1994.
At the meet’s conclusion, Calvin senior Becky Weima (Caledonia, Mich.) was named the MIAA’s Most Outstanding Swimmer for the fourth time, becoming the first individual in MIAA women’s swimming and diving history to achieve the feat. At the conference meet, Weima took first in the 100-meter freestyle (52.19), 200 freestyle (1:50.56) and 500 freestyle (5:01.21), winning the 100 and 200 freestyle events for the fourth straight year. For her efforts at the conference meet, Collegeswimming.com named Weima the Division III National Swimmer of the Week for the third time in her career.
Sophomore diver Erica Deur (Holland, Mich.) was a double winner, taking first place on the one- and three-meter boards. Deur broke a pair of MIAA records in both events, posting a score of 489.25 points on the three-meter board and a score of 478.20 points on the one-meter board. Deur was then named the MIAA’s Most Outstanding Diver for the second straight year.
Freshman Katie White (Leland, Mich.) was another double winner for Calvin, winning the 50 freestyle (23.86) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.17), with her time in the 100 breaststroke an MIAA record time. Senior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, Ohio) was yet another double winner for the Knights, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.93) and 200 breaststroke (2:23.44). Her time in the 200 IM was an MIAA record time.
Calvin also took first in all five relay events. Its 200 freestyle relay of Weima, White, junior Kati Vinson (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and sophomore Cara VanWoerkom (Wyoming, Mich.) won with an MIAA record time of 1:34.39, while the 400 medley relay team of sophomore Jordan Scott (Oakville, Ont.), freshman Emily Roberts (DeKalb, Ill.), sophomore Julie Wolfe (Westerville, Ohio) and Weima took first with a time of 3:56.58. Calvin’s 200 medley relay team of Scott, Roberts, Wolfe and White took first in an MIAA record time of 1:48.64, while the 800 freestyle relay team of junior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, Ill.), VanWoerkom, freshman Laura Price (Warren, Pa.) and Weima had an MIAA record time of 7:40.66. In addition, Calvin’s 400 freestyle relay team of Vinson, White, Duncan and Weima took first with an MIAA record time of 3:29.12.
Taking second for Calvin at the MIAA championships were Vinson in the 50 freestyle (24.05), Wilson in the 400 IM (4:37.15), Duncan in the 200 freestyle (1:54.36), Roberts in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.70), White in the 100 freestyle (52.52), Roberts in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.41) and freshman Casey Herman (Libertyville, Ill.) in the one-meter diving board (424.75).
Weima and Wilson were named to the All-MIAA team for a fourth straight year while Duncan and Vinson were so honored for the third straight year. Deur and senior Barbara Gluvers (Placerville, Calif.) were named to the All-MIAA team for the second time in their careers, while Roberts and White received the honor for the first time.
Calvin then sent a record 12 individuals, including two divers, to the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships in Houston, Texas. At the national meet, Calvin took fourth with 251 points, marking its highest-ever national finish. Calvin produced 11 NCAA III All-American (top eight) performances at the national meet and six NCAA III honorable mention All-American (places nine through 16) berths.
Weima and Deur claimed individual national titles, with Weima winning the 200 freestyle for the third straight year, recording a first-place time of 1:49.79. She also took second in the 50 freestyle (23.38) and third in the 100 freestyle (51.16). She concluded her collegiate career as a five-time national champion and a 21-time NCAA III All-American.
