For the ninth straight year, the Calvin women’s track and field team has received the all-academic team award from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Calvin men’s track and field team has also received the award.
Teams were eligible for the for honor if they had a minimum of 14 members who participated in the 2008 outdoor season and recorded a minimum 3.00 (4.00 scale) cumulative grade point average as a group. The Calvin women’s track and field team posted a 3.594 cumulative grade point average, ranking fifth among 100 teams that were so honored. The Calvin men’s track and field team posted a 3.238.

A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.
Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.

For the 14th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, and continues to be one of only seven schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga.
Calvin has finished 22nd in the nation in Division III in 2008-2009 with a point total of 541.0 points.

Meanwhile, Calvin junior Jessica Koster has received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades for the first time. Both Calvin student-athletes were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first team in the women’s track and field/cross country college division.

GRAND RAPIDS—Recent Calvin College graduate Erik Van Kampen has added one last honor to his collegiate distance running career. A native of Elmhurst, Illinois, Van Kampen has been named a ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. A graduate of Timothy Christian High School, Van Kampen has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team in the men’s cross country/track and field college division.

GRAND RAPIDS – Sharon Boeve De Kleine has been named head softball coach at Calvin College. The move brings De Kleine back to her alma mater where the 1985 graduate was a standout student-athlete in both softball, as a pitcher and a shortstop, and basketball, where she played point guard.

ROYAL OAK - Awards by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the outstanding senior athletes from its member schools during the 2008-09 academic year have been announced by Commissioner David Neilson.
Jed Christiansen of Calvin College has received the Albert H. Deal Scholar-Athlete Award, while Nora Kuiper of Hope College has been presented the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar-Athlete Award.
The awards recognize senior class athletes who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership qualities. The awards honor two former MIAA commissioners, Albert Deal (1971-91) and Sheila Wallace Kovalchik (1991-2002).

GRAND RAPIDS—For the second consecutive year, recent Calvin College graduate Cara Van Woerkom has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. A native of Wyoming, Michigan, and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Van Woerkom has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team selection in the women’s at-large college division.

Four Calvin athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors in the track and field/cross country college division.
On the men’s side, Erik Van Kampen has been so honored while on the women’s side, the Knights have three honorees in seniors Julie Bratt and Sarah Wittingen and junior Jessica Koster. All four individuals now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Calvin College has finished third in the final NCAA III women’s basketball attendance standings with an average of 1,053 fans per game. Calvin’s attendance mark was strengthened by an NCAA III single-game attendance record of 4,395 fans for its January 7, 2009, game against Trine University. The January game against Trine served as the first-ever varsity basketball game inside Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. The single-game attendance record was confirmed by the NCAA statistics office this afternoon. It breaks the previous NCAA III single-game attendance mark of 4,356 fans established by Howard Payne (TX) during an NCAA III Tournament second round game against Chapman on March 3, 2007.« First < 236 237 238 239 240 > Last »
