Women’s Soccer Team Dodges Rain Drops to Defeat Saint Mary’s 1-0

The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team dodged torrential rain showers and an upset bid by host Saint Mary’s, defeating the Belles 1-0 Tuesday afternoon. The only goal of the game came roughly 13 minutes into the second half as junior Carly Prins headed in a 15-yard shot in the box after receiving a long chip from teammate Lauren Heyboer. Ranked 23rd in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin is now 9-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAA.

Calvin nearly added to its scoring total in the final 10 minutes as freshman Liz Cancel hit the crossbar with a shot that ducked straight down and was cleared out while junior Mindy Capisciolto hit the post in the closing seconds.

Men’s Golf Fires Course Record Score of 294 In Winning MIAA Jamboree at Watermark Country Club

CASCADE—The Calvin men’s golf team used home course advantage to its advantage, firing a first place and course record score of 294 strokes Monday afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by the Knights at the Watermark Country Club.

The team score shattered the previous course record of 301 set by Olivet in 2005.

It also marks the first time Calvin has placed first place at an MIAA Jamboree since 2002 when the Knights also won at the Watermark Country Club.

With the finish on Monday, Calvin has widened its lead on second place in the overall MIAA standings, moving 14 strokes ahead of third place Trine. Trine trailed Calvin by just one stroke heading into Monday’s competition. The Knights still trail Hope by 14 strokes in the overall standings however.

Lucas Wilgenburg Named MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Week in Men’s Soccer

For the second time in his career, Calvin College junior Lucas Wilgenburg has been named the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Wilgenburg, a junior from Visalia, Calif. (Central Valley Christian HS), backstopped the Calvin defense with his marking and heading skills as the Knights posted back-to-back shutouts, blanking Olivet, 1-0, and Albion, 5-0. With Wilgenburg playing a key role, Calvin has been unscored upon in its first four MIAA games and has allowed just two goals in 10 games this season.

Women’s Golf Fifth at MIAA Jamboree #5 - Solidifies Fifth Place in Overall League Standings

SOUTH BEND, IN – The Calvin women’s golf team solidified its spot for fifth place in the MIAA standings with a fifth place team score of 358 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s on Saturday at the Blackthorn Golf Club.

The team score by the Knights is the second-best at an 18-hole league event in Calvin women’s golf history, surpassed only by a team score of 356 recorded at 2004 MIAA Jamboree held at Trine’s Zollner Golf Club.

Calvin has now posted two of the top three team scores in school history (at a league event) this year. Two weeks ago, Calvin recorded a team score of 362 at a league outing hosted by Hope at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club.

Men’s Soccer Defeats Albion 5-0

ALBION – Calvin concluded a three-game MIAA road swing with a 5-0 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon. Ranked 15th nationally in one poll and 17th in another, Calvin is now 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the MIAA.

Calvin broke loose for two first half goals with sophomore Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) scoring unassisted in the fifth minute of play on a scramble play at the top of the box. Junior Kurt Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA/Trinity Christian HS) then scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year, blasting in a rebound off a shot by senior teammate Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) midway through the first half.

Women’s Soccer Defeats Olivet 5-0

The rain that started coming down early in the first half of Saturday’s game didn’t stop the Knights of Calvin College as they rolled to a convincing 5-0 victory over their MIAA counterpart Olivet College, out-shooting the Comets 28-2 over the course of the game.

Women’s Cross Country Competes at Notre Dame/Adrian Invitational

NOTRE DAME, IN/ADRIAN, MI – The top-ranked (Division III) Calvin women’s cross country team produced a third place team finish in the (5K) Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon, recording a team score of 119 points. Second-ranked (Division II) Grand Valley State took first place with 48 points while Division I Dayton took second with 104 points. Eighth-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the second-best Division III school, placing seventh with 190 points.

Men’s Cross Country Teams Compete at Notre Invitational/Adrian Invitational

NOTRE DAME, IN/ADRIAN, MI – The 10th-ranked Calvin men’s cross country team placed 10th in the 8K Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational with 249 points. Top-ranked North Central (Division III) took first place with 46 points, edging third-ranked (Division II) Grand Valley State by six points for the win.

Calvin was paced by sophomore Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led the Knights with an 18th place time of 25:26. Kramer was seventh among Division III competitors in the race.

Women’s Golf Moves Into 5th Place In Overall MIAA Standings After 4th Place Finish at MIAA Jamboree

KALAMAZOO—With three 18-hole rounds left to play, the Calvin women’s golf team has moved into fifth place in the MIAA standings. The Knights moved past Albion and into fifth place in the overall league standings with a fourth place team score of 372 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo Thursday afternoon at the Milham Park Golf Club. Calvin currently holds a 13-stroke lead over Albion for fifth place and trails fourth place Trine by 35 strokes. Faced with a course filled with sand traps and slick putting greens, the Knights were still able to place four golfers under 100 led by seniors Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 91.

Calvin Women’s Cross Country Team Ranked Number-One/Men Ranked Seventh

Division III Top 35 Cross Country Rankings

For the second time this year, the Calvin women’s cross country team finds itself holding a share of the top spot in the Division III Top 35 poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Calvin shares the top spot this week with John Hopkins (MD) which makes it initial entry at the top spot. Previous number-one and defending national champion Middlebury (VT) has dropped down to eighth.  Washington University of St. Louis is ranked third.
