Emily Ottenhoff Named MIAA Women’s Soccer Most Valuable Player

Calvin College senior midfielder Emily Ottenhoff has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in women’s soccer. A native of Palos Heights, Illinois, Ottenhoff is the sixth individual in Calvin women’s soccer history to receive the award. A graduate of Chicago Christian High School, Ottenhoff finished in the top 10 in the MIAA conference statistics in goals, assists and points. Overall this year, she has 15 points on the strength of six goals and three assists. Ottenhoff has also been named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year.

This weekend, Calvin will play host to a four-team NCAA III women’s soccer regional featuring teams from Wittenberg, Ohio Northern, Washington & Jeferson and Calvin. On Friday, November 13, Wittenberg will face Ohio Northern in a first round game at 11:00 a.m. followed by a first round game between Washington and Jefferson and Calvin at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Greg Snapper Named MIAA Men’s Soccer MVP - Michael Holwerda Named Zuidema Award Winner

For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Greg Snapper has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player in men’s soccer. In addition, Calvin College senior Michael Holwerda has been named the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Marvin Zuidema Award.

The Zuidema Award honors Dr. Marvin Zuidema, longtime men’s soccer coach and athletic administrator at Calvin College. The recipient is to be a senior selected for his contributions to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in athletics and academics. Holwerda is the third player from Calvin to receive the honor and the second from his family as his older brother David Holwerda was selected for the award in 2006.

Men’s Basketball Drops Exhibition Game to Ferris State

The 2009-2010 menís basketball season got underway for the Knights Tuesday night in an exhibition game against fellow west Michigan rival Ferris State University, a Division II team from Big Rapids.  Calvin stayed competitive into the second half before the Bulldogs turned on the heat, rolling to an eventual 88-68 win.

Lizzie Kamp and Kelsey Sears Receive MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin middle blocker Lizzie Kamp its Player of the Week and Calvin libero Kelsey Sears its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through November 7.

Kamp, a freshman from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 38 kills for an average of 3.45 per game for the week in leading the Knights to the MIAA tournament title. She had 14 kills in a first-round match against Saint Maryís and 13 kills in the championship match against Hope. Kamp added 19 digs, including 11 against Hope, and 10 blocks. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Brad Heethuis Named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in Men’s Soccer

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior striker Brad Heethuis has been named the MIAA’s Offensive Player of the Week. A native of Jenison and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian high School, Heethuis scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Hope on Saturday that clinched the outright MIAA title for the Knights.

The goal, scored just 6:04 into the match, was the fourth of the year for Heethuis who now has three game-winning goals to his credit this fall. Heethuis currently ranks third on the Calvin team in scoring with 13 points on the strength of four goals and five assists.

Volleyball To Face Wittenberg in Great Lakes Regional at Hope College

The Calvin women’s volleyball team will face Wittenberg University in a first round Great Lakes Regional match at Hope College. The starting time will be announced later this evening. Calvin (27-6) is making its 19th NCAA III Tournament appearance. Wittenberg (24-7) and Calvin played earlier this year at the Wittenberg Border Battle with Wittenberg defeating Calvin in five sets. It will mark the third meeting between Calvin and Wittenberg in the NCAA III Tournament in the last five years. Other first round matches will pit Bluffton (27-5) up against Ohio Northern (27-3), Heidelberg (27-7) up against North Central, IL (34-4) and Hope (30-3) up against Lakeland, WI (23-13). The winner of the Calvin/Wittenberg match will play the winner of the Hope/Lakeland first round match.

Women’s Soccer to Host Four-Team Regional/Men’s Soccer Headed To Wheaton Regional

The Calvin women’s soccer team has been selected to host a four-team NCAA regional this Friday and Saturday that will include Washington and Jefferson (PA), Ohio Northern and Wittenberg. Ohio Northern (15-4-1) will face Wittenberg (11-4-5) at 11:00 a.m. in the opening first round game with Calvin (13-4-1) slated to face Washington and Jefferson, PA (12-6-2) at 1:30 p.m. Ticket prices are: $6.00 for general admission, $3.00 for students, senior citizens and members of the military and $2.00 for children ages 3-12. Meanwhile, the Calvin men’s soccer team will travel to Wheaton College (IL) for a four-team Friday/Saturday regional. Calvin (15-4-1) will face host Wheaton (14-3-3) in a Friday first round game with the University of Chicago (12-3-3) facing Wartburg (15-4-1) in the other first round game on Friday.

Women’s Soccer Receives At-Large NCAA III Tourney Bid - Soccer/VBall Brackets Coming Monday

The Calvin women’s soccer season is not over. On Sunday evening, the Knights were informed that they had received one of 21 at-large (Pool C) bids to the NCAA III Tournament. Women’s Soccer NCAA III Tournament Field Release

The Knights will be making their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin’s destination and opponent will be unveiled on Monday morning as will be the case for the men’s soccer and volleyball teams which have earned automatic bids to the NCAA III Tournament.

The Albion women’s soccer team gained the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament this past Saturday. With Calvin and Albion both receiving bids, it marks the first time since 2005 that the MIAA has sent two teams to the NCAA III women’s soccer tournament when Calvin and Hope were both in the field.

The NCAA III Tournament brackets for menís/womenís soccer are set to be announced Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. at http://ncaa.com. The Calvin menís soccer team has secured an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA title. The Calvin women’s volleyball team also has earned an automatic bid by winning the MIAA Tournament title.

Calvin Volleyball Players Receive All-MIAA Honors

Four members of the Calvin womenís volleyball team have received All-MIAA Honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior Kelsey Sears and sophomore Rebecca Kamp.

Calvin players named to the All-MIAA second team include sophomores Renee DeHaan and Erin Vander Plas.
