GRAND RAPIDS, MI—Victory can sometimes be oh so sweet, which was exactly the case for the Knights of Calvin College Saturday as it eliminated the Wittenberg Tigers in a close 1-0 match, moving on to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2006.

With a large crowd in attendance the two teams squared off knowing that should they lose, the season would be over, and with picture perfect weather for a soccer game on Calvin’s campus, the Knights were the ones who came out on top.

GRAND RAPIS—You can never say never.

After what was thought to be a done season for the Knights, Calvin was given a second chance with an at-large bid to the big dance where it was matched up at home against the Washington and Jefferson Presidents Friday afternoon.  Calvin knew it could not take that opportunity for granted in this-win-or-go-home tournament, and they came out with fire against the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson, defeating them by a score of 4-0.

GRAND RAPIDS—As NCAA Tournament play began at Calvin’s Zuidema Field Friday afternoon in the first of two First Round match-ups, an opportunistic Wittenberg University played Ohio University to a 3-1 Tigers victory, and will play the winner of the second match-up between host Calvin College and the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson.

In the first half of play both teams played tough and kept the score close, with Wittenburg tapping in the opening goal in the 23rd off of a rebound shot.  Sheryl Chambers scored the goal, her eighth of the year, on the goal line after the Ohio Northern keeper made a great diving stop on a shot from Wittenberg forward Kailey Striebel, who was credited with the assist.  At 1-0 the first half came to a close, but goal scoring was only just to come for Wittenberg.
