One of the hardest working groups of athletes at Calvin are certainly the members of the Calvin swim and diving program. Here is why: Even before the fall semester begins, swimmers start practicing intensely, and their hard work continues all the way into February to Conference, the meet where that hard work pays off.

For the Calvin women, this initial day at Calvinís Venema Aquatic Center has been one of the better first days of conference competition in recent memory and the hard work they have put in definitely is showing.  The Knights put up 323 points Thursday, leading the next closest team by 147 [second-place Hope with 176], and moving to Fridayís races they are the frontrunner for the conference title.

On the menís side, Calvin sits in fourth place with 124 points, just four points behind third place Olivet. Hope leads the menís standings with 295 points with Kalamazoo second with 254 points.

The charity stripe.

In Wednesday’s 78-67 win at Adrian, Calvin connected on 23 of 29 attempts at the free throw line to remain tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Hope.

Having a week off after losing a heartbreaker to your biggest rival has its advantages, or at least it did this week for the Knights as they got right back to work in defeating Trine 75-49 Wednesday night just a week after suffering their second loss of the year to Hope.

Saturday, February 06, 2010

The Calvin men’s tennis team kicked off its season on Saturday with a pair of dual matches inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin opened the day with a 9-0 victory over Grand Rapids Community College and followed with a 7-2 win over Spring Arbor later Saturday evening.

Calvin’s victory over Grand Rapids Community College will not count on its season record as it did not come against a four-year institution.

Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Grand Rapids City Tournament with Aquinas, Grand Rapids Community College and Hope also competing.
