Calvin/Hope Women's Basketball Highlights from Feb. 3, 2010

Communications and Marketing student videographer Mike Zaagman provides highlights from Calvin’s final regular season meeting with Hope on February 3, 2010. The two teams will tangle again in the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s winner will gain an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament. Hope (26-1) is ranked fourth nationally while Calvin (24-3) is ranked 11th.

Calvin Races To 90-71 Victory Over Saint Mary’s in MIAA Tournament Semis - To Face Hope in Final

Thursday nightís MIAA Tournament semifinal game between the Knights and Belles saw Calvin set a new MIAA Tournament record for made field goals as Calvin connected on 38 field goals in racing away to a 90-71 victory over Saint Mary’s at Van Noord Arena.  The explosive offense that the Knights have possessed all year, led by freshman sensation Carissa Verkaik, shot nearly 60 percent from the field and now will play Saturday afternoon in the conference tournament finals which will be hosted by Hope.  The previous MIAA Tournament single-game field goal record was 37, set by Albion in a 90-87 loss to Hope in a first round MIAA tournament game in 1996.

Calvin Baseball Season Set to Open on March 6 With Twinbill at Otterbein

The 2010 Calvin baseball season is set to open on March 6 at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Last year, Calvin finished 23-17 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 20-8 conference record. The Calvin Sports Information Department caught up with head coach John Sparks recently to talk about the upcoming season. Men’s Basketball Advances to MIAA Tournament Semifinals With 67-49 Win Over Alma

The Calvin men’s basketball team advanced to the MIAA Tournament semifinals with a 67-49 victory over Alma Wednesday in a first round MIAA Tournament game at Van Noord Arena. Calvin (18-8) will face Olivet (14-12) in the second of two semifinal games Friday at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. Hope (19-7) will face Adrian (15-11) in Friday’s first semifinal at 6 p.m. with the Calvin/Olivet semifinal set for 8:15 p.m. John Mantel led Calvin with 16 points while Matt Veltema had 11 points in Calvin’s win over Alma (4-22). Calvin broke the game open with a 10-2 run early in the second half.

Women’s Basketball Team Advances to MIAA Tournament Semifinals to Face Saint Mary’s

The Calvin women’s basketball team defeated Olivet in a first round MIAA Tournament game Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena 76-57. The Knights (23-3) will face Saint Mary’s (15-11) in a semifinal game Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. In Calvin’s win over Olivet, the Knights connected on 12 three-point shots including four from freshman Kelsey Irwin. Freshman Carissa Verkaik led Calvin in scoring with 15 points to go with nine rebounds. Irwin had 12 points while senior Amber Benthem had 10 points and four assists.

Carissa Verkaik Lands MIAA Player of the Week Honors In Women’s Basketball

For the third time this year, Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s basketball. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik established an MIAA single-game scoring record Wednesday as she scored 46 points in leading the Knights to a 93-77 victory over Adrian.

The previous single-game record had been 42 points, set by Hopes Kari Nysse against Albion in 1996. Verkaik also set another MIAA single-game record with 18 field goals, breaking the previous mark of 17 set by Calvin’s Eileen Boonstra in 1980 and matched two years later by Laura Knapp of Adrian.

Brent Schuster Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Brent Schuster has received MIAA Player of the Week honors in men’s basketball. A native of Denver, Colorado, Schuster shares this week’s award with Albion’s J.C. Cruse.

A graduate of Denver Christian High School, Schuster averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game off the bench. Schuster scored 12 points in Wednesday’s 78-66 win over Albion and 18 points in Saturday’s 78-73 overtime win over Alma. In the win over Alma, Schuster hit a pair of game-tying free throws with six seconds left in regulation and then scored the first five points of overtime.

Calvin Deadlocked With Hope For MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Lead

The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings through the recently completed MIAA winter sports season have been released and Calvin and Hope are tied for first place with 136 points. The MIAA Commissionerís Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 18 sports for men and women.

ē The final Commissionerís Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s best standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine sports for women. The tabulation through the winter season is based on 5-of-6 sports for men and 5-of-6 sports for women.

More NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks for Calvin Track & Field Teams

ALLENDALE—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams posted a pair of NCAA (indoor) provisional qualifying marks Friday night at the Grand Rapids Championshipos hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Both provisional performances came in the women’s competition. Calvin’s first provisional mark came in the women’s shot put as junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) took seventh in the shot put with a provisional mark of 42-8 3/4.

In the distance medley relay, Calvin’s quartet of senior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL), junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ), sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) took first place with a provisional qualifying tie of 12:04.18.

All-MIAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Teams Announced

The All-MIAA men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been announced and six members of the Calvin women’s team have been so honored while one member of the Calvin men’s team has been selected.

Calvin athletes that have been selected to the All-MIAA women’s swimming and diving team include seniors Emily Roberts, Maggie Vail and Casey Herman, junior Monica Bressler and freshmen Rachel Bos and Elizabeth Counsell.

On the men’s side, Calvin freshman Mark Rushlow has been named to the All-MIAA team.
