The Calvin women’s tennis team evened its season record at 2-2 with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over nationally-ranked Davenport University Friday evening inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

Calvin trailed 2-1 after doubles competition but came back to gain four singles points including a match-clinching win at No. 6 singles as senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) claimed a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Calvin’s lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles as the tandem of sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) picked up an 8-1 win.

Calvin then mounted its comeback as Roode picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles and junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) recorded a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.

Reitsma knotted the scored at 4-4 with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles and Doezema then came up with the clutch win at No. 6 singles.

“It was a real nice victory for our team,” said Calvin women’s tennis coach Jerry Bergsma. “Davenport came in as a nationally-ranked (NAIA) team and we knew it would not be easy. Our team showed a lot of heart tonight so that was very fun to see.”

Calvin returns to action on March 12 when it takes on Aquinas College at the Riverview Raquet Club.
