Women’s Tennis Defeats North Central/Falls to Wheaton Over Weekend

The regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis teams split a pair of non-conference matches this past weekend, defeating North Central (IL) 8-1 on Friday night and then falling at nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL) 6-3 on Saturday evening.
Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings, the Knights are now 2-1 overall.
In the win at North Central on Friday, Calvin took five of the six singles points with junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning at No. 1 singles, junior Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 2 singles, senior Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 3 singles, senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 4 singles and senior Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) winning at No. 6 singles. In doubles play, Oosterhouse and Spoelhof won at No. 1 doubles, senior Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Strikwerda won at No. 2 doubles and Geenen and Rachel DeGroot won at No. 3 doubles.
In the match against Wheaton, ranked 20th nationally and seventh in the Central Region, Oosterhouse picked up a big 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles while junior Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) was a winner at No. 5 singles. Wheaton took the remaining four singles flights. Calvin’s lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles with DeGroot and Geenen picking up a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) win.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Ferris State in a non-conference match at 3 p.m. inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
