Coming off of a season in which the Calvin women’s tennis team won the MIAA conference for the first time in 29 years, the Knights looked to open their conference season with a win against the Kalamazoo Hornets.
“We talked in practice yesterday about refocusing for the conference season” head coach Jerry Bergsma said after the match. “We needed to sharpen up our game as compared to how we played in the non-conference season”.
The Knights did indeed focus in as they narrowly defeated the Hornets 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Calvin started off the afternoon taking two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Melissa Ooosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof defeated Kari Larson and Kelsey Moran 8-0 in the first doubles flight. Senior Michelle Busscher along with sophomore partner Elise Doezema beat Jenna Riehl and Paula Silverman 8-3. The Hornets would not go away empty-handed, however. Kelsey Hassevoort and Kate Farwell defeated a pair of Calvin freshmen, Bethany Zoerhof and Lauren Schlagenhauf 8-2.
Calvin’s seniors would silence the Hornet comeback by taking the first three singles flights and clinching that match. Senior Melissa Ooosterhouse defeated Kelsey Hassevort 6-2, 6-1 despite being down a break early.
“It was a tough match. It took me a while to figure out her style of play. It’s nice to get this first conference win against a quality opponent” Ooosterhouse said after the match.
Katilin Spoelhof defeated Kari Larson 6-1, 6-0. Michelle Busscher defeated Kelsey Moran 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Knights.
“Michelle is a tough competitor. When put in that situation, I am very confident she will pull through” Bergsma remarked.
Kalamazoo picked up victories at 4th, 5th and 6th singles to close the gap to 5-4.
The Knights will take on the Scots of Alma at Alma on Monday, April 4.
