Women’s Tennis Defeats Alma in MIAA Regular Season Finale - Finishes 3rd in MIAA

EAST LANSING - The Calvin women’s tennis team closed out its MIAA regular season campaign with a 5-4 victory over Alma Wednesday afternoon in a match played at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Center. Calvin finishes in a three-way tie for third place in the final MIAA regular season standings with Saint Mary’s and Kalamazoo. The Knights are currently 8-9 on the season.
Calvin gained an early 2-1 lead through doubles play as seniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof were 8-1 winners at No. 1 doubles while senior Michelle Busscher and sophomore Elise Doezema were 8-5 winners at No. 2 doubles. Calvin then sewed up the match with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles with Oosterhouse a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles, Spoelhof a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles and Busscher a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles.
Oosterhouse finished her MIAA regular season undefeated at 8-0 in singles play while Spoelhof and Busscher both finished 7-1 in singles against league opponents. Oosterhouse and Spoelhof also improved to 15-3 overall and finished 8-0 in doubles play against league competition.
Oosterhouse concludes her MIAA regular season career with a 29-3 singles record while Spoelhof was 25-7 and Busscher 26-5.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it competes at the MIAA Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo College. Calvin will be the fourth seed for the tournament and will face fifth-seeded Saint Mary’s in a first round match Friday morning.
