Women’s Swimming and Diving Opens Season With Dual Meet Win at Saint Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, IN – The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team opened its 2008-09 campaign with a 157-122 dual meet victory at Saint Mary’s Saturday afternoon.

Calvin took first place in nine events led by senior Cara VanWoerkom (Wyoming/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb HS) who were both double-winners. VanWoerkom won the 50 freestyle (26.04) and 100 freestyle (56.02) while Roberts won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.82) and 100 butterfly (1:02.06). 

Other individual winners for Calvin included junior Laura Price (Warren, PA/Warren HS) in the 1000 freestyle (11:22.37), Jo VanderLinde (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200 backstroke (2:03.51), senior Erica Deur (Holland/Holland Christian HS) on the one-meter diving board (268.20), junior Maggie Vail (Portage/Portage Northern HS) in the 200 meter breaststroke (2:30.10) and senior Jordan Scott (Oakville, ON/Kings Christian Collegiate) in the 500 freestyle (5:31.33).

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes in a non-conference dual meet at Grand Valley State at 6:00 p.m.
