NOTRE DAME, IN—The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team dodged torrential rain showers and an upset bid by host Saint Mary’s, defeating the Belles 1-0 Tuesday afternoon.
The only goal of the game came roughly 13 minutes into the second half as junior Carly Prins headed in a 15-yard shot in the box after receiving a long chip from teammate Lauren Heyboer. Ranked 23rd in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin is now 9-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAA.
Calvin is now alone in first place in the MIAA standings, two points ahead of Kalamazoo which tied Albion on Tuesday.
Calvin nearly added to its scoring total in the final 10 minutes as freshman Liz Cancel hit the crossbar with a shot that ducked straight down and was cleared out while junior Mindy Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) hit the post in the closing seconds.
Calvin held a 22-2 shots at goal advantage including a 13-1 advantage in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) posted one save and collected her eighth shutout of the year.
The Knights will host Kalamazoo on Saturday in an early-season showdown for first place in the MIAA standings.
