Women’s Soccer Stunned by Late Adrian Goal in 1-0 Saturday Defeat
Saturday, October 26, 2013
ADRIAN - A sudden strike by Sam Barker stunned the Calvin women’s soccer team and snapped the 12-game unbeaten streak by the Knights.
A senior striker for Adrian, Barker scored with 8:42 left in regulation to lift the host Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over Calvin. The Adrian win knocks Calvin out of first place in the MIAA standings as Hope moves three point ahead of Calvin in the league table. Hope has played one additional league game than Calvin. The Knights could still control their own destiny for at least a share of the league title but would need to win their remaining three league games including a November 4 home game against Hope.
Calvin (13-2-2 overall, 10-2-1 MIAA) controlled the tempo for most of the game at Adrian’s Docking Stadium, outshooting the host Bulldogs (12-5-0 overall, 10-4-0 MIAA) 16-7 but the Knights could not find the back of the net.
Calvin threatened on a number of occassions. The most dangerous chance of the first half for Calvin came in the 33rd minute as senior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) ripped a blast headed for the top corner only to see Adrian Taylor Roce bat the ball out of bounds with a leaping save.
In the second half, Calvin senior Heidi Scholten (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) cranked a shot that hit the crossbar with 10:05 left on the block.
Moments later, Adrian began a counter-attack through the middle led by returning MIAA MVP Erin Weide who found the feet of Barker. Barker took a few dribbles and then ripped a shot from the 10-yard line past Calvin goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) for the eventual game-winner.
Calvin threated in the closing minutes and had a shot by senior Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) fly just wide on what would prove to be the final play of the game.
Calvin will now prepare for its final slate of regular season games. The Knights will host Kalamazoo next Wednesday at 4 p.m. followed by a trip to Olivet next Saturday (noon kick). The regular season finale with Hope on November 4 is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
In addition, the four-team MIAA Tournament has already been set with Calvin, Hope, Adrian and Alma all qualifying. The only thing left to determine is the MIAA regular season champion and the seeding for the upcoming tournament.
