GRAND RAPIDS—The 24th-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over visiting Kenyon College Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. The Knights scored three times in the first half including twice on corner kick plays.
Senior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) put the Knights on the board in the sixth minute of play, converting a cross into the box from junior Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). The Knights then struck for two goals just a minute apart midway through the first half - both coming off of corner kicks from junior Mindy Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). Senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) converted the first corner kick, heading in Capisciolto’s serve in the 29th minute of play. One minute later, Prins headed in her fourth goal of the year off a corner from Capisciolto.
Calvin’s final goal came in the 53rd minute with senior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) ripping in her team-leading fifth goal of the year after receiving a through-ball pass from Schnabel.
Calvin (6-0-0) outshot Kenyon (1-4-0) 20-6. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) had three saves in nets to collect her fifth shutout victory of the year.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to 15th-ranked University of Chicago for a 4:00 p.m. (CST) match. The contest will be a rematch of a second round NCAA III Tournament game from last November which ended in a 0-0 draw with Chicago advancing by way of a penalty kick shootout.
