ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin women’s soccer team picked up its first victory of the season and did so in its MIAA opener, defeating host Trine University 4-2 Wednesday afternoon.
Calvin (1-4-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAA) took the early lead on a 25-yard blast by junior Liz Cancel (St. Clair Shores/Fraser HS) just 3:46 into the match after receiving a feed from sophomore teammate Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS). The goal was the third of the year for Cancel who leads the Knights in scoring. Trine came back to tie the game on a header off a long throw-in in the 29th minute of play.
Minutes into the second half, Carter scored off a pass from freshman Samantha Osterhaven (Caledonia/South Christian HS).
Calvin then added unassisted goals from junior Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South) and Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) to take a 4-1 lead. Trine (2-3-0 overall, 0-1-0 MIAA) added a goal in the closing moments of the game on a penalty kick after a Calvin defender was whistled for a hand ball foul in the box.
Calvin held a 16-6 shots at goal advantage. Freshman Stephanie Goeldner (Des Moines, IA/Des Moines Christian HS) and sophomore Emily Mulder (Glen Elyn, IL/Wheaton Academy) shared time in goal for the Knights with Goeldner collecting one save and Mulder two saves.
Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts defending MIAA champion Alma at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
