ALBION - The Calvin women’s soccer team got back on the winning track with a 4-1 victory Thursday afternoon at Albion College. Freshman Samantha Osterhaven (Caledonia/South Christian HS) led the Calvin charge by scoring her first three collegiate goals all in Thursday’s win over the Britons. The hat-trick performance helped propel the Knights to a 4-0 lead with Albion scoring a second half goal to bring the final margin of victory to three. Junior Liz Cancel (St. Clair Shores/Fraser HS) also scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Knights.
Osterhaven put Calvin on the board in the 30th minute of play on an unassisted goal and then scored again four minutes later after receiving a lead pass from sophomore Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS). Cancel then broke loose on a breakaway of her own in the 41st minute to give the Knights a 3-0 halftime advantage.
In the 60th minute of play, Osterhaven notched her hat-trick by heading in a cross from sophomore Paige Rindels (Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson HS). Less then a minute later, Albion scored its lone goal of the game on a long blast by Rachel Kain.
Calvin held an 18-4 shots at goal advantage in the win. Freshman Lauren Merz (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) was credited with the win in goal for the Knights.
Calvin (2-5-0 overall, 2-1-0 MIAA) will host Olivet on Saturday at noon.
