Wednesday, September 01, 2010
Calvin opened its 2010 campaign with a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Aquinas Wednesday afternoon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. The Knights have now won four straight games against Aquinas.
Freshman Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) provided the only goal of the game, scoring in the eighth minute off play off a corner kick from senior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS). Calvin had several chances to widen the gap but Aquinas goalkeeper Kelsey Duley had a stellar game in net, collecting nine saves including five in the first half when the Knights threatened to blow the game open early.
Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) also had a strong debut, recording two saves in posting her first collegiate shutout.
Calvin held a 22-5 shots at goal advantage with sophomore Jillian Honderd (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS) leading the offensive attack with six shots at goal.
Ranked 15th nationally, Calvin will now travel this weekend to face second-ranked Washington University on Friday and Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday. Both games will be played on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
