Box Score

WHEATON, IL—Calvin outshot fourth-ranked Wheaton 13-9 late Saturday afternoon but the fourth-ranked Thunder came away with a 1-0 victory. The loss is Calvin’s third straight. All three losses have come against Central Region opponents (Chicago, Washington U. and Wheaton) and all have come by shutout scores.

Wheaton (8-1) scored the only goal of the game in the 12th minute of play as Ali Kopelman redirected a cross into the box past Calvin goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS). Calvin nearly tied the gamee late in the first half on a rush up the left wing by junior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) but a Wheaton defender was able to deflect Schnabel’s shot wide of the goal.

Schnabel led Calvin with three shots including two on goal. Senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and junior Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also were credited with two shots apiece.

Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto posted six saves in gaining the shutout win.

Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
