Women’s Soccer Falls to Washington University 1-0
Friday, September 03, 2010
ST. LOUIS, MO - In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, the Bears of Washington University came out on top by a 1-0 score Friday afternoon. Friday’s game marked the third meeting between the two Central Region rivals in the last two years with Washington University claiming victory in all three meetings by a single goal. A year ago, the Bears defeated Calvin in Grand Rapids 1-0 in a regular season non-conference match and then edged the Knights 2-1 in a national quarterfinal contest in Rock Island, Illinois.
On Friday, the second-ranked Bears scored the only goal of the game in the 57th minute of play on a shot by Emma Brown - the 17th of her career.
Ranked 15th nationally, Calvin (1-1-0) came close to taking the lead in the 21st minute as senior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) ripped a shot from point-blank range that was deflected wide of the goal by Washington goalkeeper Clara Jaques. Calvin then received an ensuing corner kick by senior Lauren Heyboer (Portage, MI/Kalamazoo Christian HS). Heyboer’s corner kick was well-placed with freshman Danielle Carter (DeWitt, MI/DeWitt HS) getting a clean head on the corner and just missing the corner with her redirected shot.
Washington University (1-1-0) held a 13-4 shots at goal advantage. Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern HS) was credited with fives in defeat.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces UW-Eau Claire at 3:00 p.m. in a game scheduled to be played in St. Louis.
