GRAND RAPIDS – In a matchup of the top two teams in the MIAA, Calvin outlasted Alma, defeating the Scots 1-0 on a rainy afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Calvin almost got on the board in the fourth minute. Junior Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt) fed a through ball to freshmen Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) on the near sideline. Capel shot far post. Alma goalkeeper Morgan Waier tipped the ball just wide of the net.
Alma held the upper hand in possession for the next fifteen minutes. The Scots put two shots on net, but Calvin junior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn denied Alma a goal.
The Knights responded, enjoying the advantage in possession for the rest of the first half. Calvin outshot Alma 13-4 in the session, but could not get on the scoreboard.
The first 20 minutes of the second half were evenly matched. In the 77th minute, Calvin earned a corner kick. Sophomore Elle Burman (Jenison/Unity Christian) took the kick, and sent it to the near post. Freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian) headed the ball past Waier, netting her sixth goal of the season. Alma could not muster anything on offense, and Calvin improved to 9-3-0, 7-2-0 MIAA on the season.
Calvin outshot Alma 19-8 in the contest, as well as 7-5 in the shots on goal category. Ashton Hearn earned a shutout victory for the Knights.
“We played a really quality team this afternoon, and were able to win at home,” Calvin head coach Mark Recker said. “The conference is learning that Taylor [Ten Harmsel] can score in a variety of ways.”
With its win, Calvin gains sole possession of first place in the MIAA. The Knights return to action Wednesday, October 17, when they host the Olivet Comets. The game is scheduled to start at 4pm at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
